Pirates shore up 40-man roster

(11/20/2014) The Pirates have added four players to the 40-man roster on Thursday.

Jameson Taillon , Nick Kingham , Willy Garcia and Elias Diaz all had their contracts purchased. In order to make room on the 40-man roster, the team outrighted Brent Morel and designated Ramon Cabrera for assignment.

(8/30/2014) The Pirates recalled infielder Brent Morel from Triple-A Indianapolis Saturday, the team announced.

Morel spent the minimum 10 days in the minors prior to his recall, and should be able to spend the remainder of the season in the majors with rosters expanding in a few days. He has  hit just .143/.182/.190 in 21 at-bats in the majors this season.

The club claimed pitcher Liam Hendriks, and needed to make room on the 40-man roster. Morel spent most of last season in the minors. He's hit .229/.276/.333 in 616 career at-bats.

(12/23/2013) CSNChicago.com reports that the Blue Jays claimed third baseman Brent Morel off waivers from the White Sox on Monday.

Morel appeared in only 12 games for the White Sox in 2013, as he spent most of the season at Triple-A Charlotte, where he batted .266 with six home runs, 54 RBI and 14 stolen bases. He began the 2012 season as the White Sox's regular third baseman.

(2/14/2013) White Sox manager Robin Ventura told Comcast SportsNet Chicago that third baseman Brent Morel could earn some looks at other infield spots in spring to give him more versatility. According to Ventura, Morel is fully recovered from a back issue that lingered all last season and has shown better bat speed. “A slight injury, it just makes guys look different in the way they move around and for him he’s swinging the bat free and easy,” Ventura said. “It’s different when you get some spikes on and when you’re running around and doing stuff. His [injury situation] is more of longevity of being able to stay and play nice and loose.”

Manager Robin Ventura said Morel remains a possibility for the position. He was limited to just 35 games last season due to injury before finishing his year at Triple-A Charlotte.
