Reds add Kyle Skipworth, Josh Smith; option Iglesias, Dominguez

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(4/13/2015) The Reds selected the contracts of catcher Kyle Skipworth and pitcher Josh Smith Monday, optioning infielder Chris Dominguez and pitcher Raisel Iglesias to Triple-A Louisville.

Skipworth will give the Reds added depth at catcher with Devin Mesoraco dealing with hip discomfort. Smith joins the bullpen and is on the verge of making his major-league debut after going 10-7 with a 4.70 ERA and 123:66 K:BB ratio in 159 innings with Triple-A Louisville.

Chris Dominguez earns spot on Opening Day roster

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(4/2/2015) Reds infielder Chris Dominguez was informed Wednesday that he has made the team's 25-man roster for Opening Day, MLB.com reports.

"Certainly the offense stood out with the power and the extra-base hits," manager Bryan Price said. "His defense in the last six weeks has really greatly improved, particularly in the infield. And he brings energy into everything he does, from the drills outside to a pinch-hit at-bat to coming in the last three innings of a spring training game."

Dominguez hit .316/.322/.596 with three home runs and 14 RBI in 57 spring at-bats. The versatile bench player saw at least 15 appearances each at first base, third base and shortstop as well as in left field and right field with Triple-A Fresno last season.

Dominguez joins outfielder Brennan Boesch and pitchers Jason Marquis and Kevin Gregg as nonroster invitees to earn spots on the Opening Day roster.

Chris Dominguez intrigues Reds with versatility

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(3/17/2015) Reds manager Bryan Price said Tuesday that he was intrigued by the versatility of roster candidate Chris Dominguez, who has played left field and right field in addition to shortstop, third base and first base, MLB.com reports.

"It certainly helps," Price said. "The other part, especially with a team that at this point in time is healthy, would be the ability to come off the bench. ... One of the reasons he's getting some DH opportunities in some of these games is simply to see what he can do swinging that bat without having just come off from playing defense. It's the challenge of a young player -- learning to be a bench player at the big league level, at least initially."

Dominguez hit his first home run of the spring in his only at-bat Monday, leaving him 7 for 27 in 12 games. He spent most of last season with Triple-A Fresno, hitting .274/.307/.460 with 21 home runs, 85 RBI and 21 stolen bases in 496 at-bats, before signing a minor-league deal with the Reds this offseason.

Dominguez making easy transition

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(6/28/2011) Giants 3B prospect Christopher Dominguez followed up winning Eastern League player of the week honors by stating his case for earning the honor in consecutive weeks with a career-high six RBI on Monday for Double-A Richmond. Dominguez finished the game against Harrisburg 2 for 4 with one homer and one double. "It was great, I was just trying to get good pitches to hit," Dominguez told MLB.com. "I'm still trying to learn the game a bit and get advice from my coaches, and so far, it's been a good experience." Dominguez has now hit safely in seven straight games, and is batting .333 with two homers and 15 RBI in 11 games since his promotion from Class A San Jose. "I guess it seems that way," Dominguez said of the fast transition. "I'm still trying to learn every day and read all the pitchers and get the advice I can from coaches on how they'd go after certain guys in situations. But the transition has been easy because of the guys, they've welcomed me pretty well."
