Varvaro was designated for assignment on April 29, and the Cubs claimed him off waivers on May 3. The Cubs also designated him for assignment and outrighted him to Triple-A.

Varvaro was diagnosed with a right flexor tendon strain.

The Red Sox released a statement, saying, "As a result of his medical condition on the date of his outright assignment to the Cubs, the severity of which was unknown to the Red Sox at the time of the assignment, both clubs agreed that it would be appropriate to return Varvaro to the Red Sox for placement on the disabled list in accordance with the Major League rules."

Varvaro was placed on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 29.

Cubs claim Anthony Varvaro off waivers from Red Sox

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(5/3/2015) The Cubs have claimed pitcher Anthony Varvaro off waivers from the Red Sox and designated pitcher Joe Ortiz for assignment, the team announced Sunday.

Varvaro made nine appearances with the Red Sox before hitting waivers, giving up five earned runs in 11 innings while striking out eight batters and walking six. He posted ERAs under 3.00 while making more than 60 appearances in each of his previous two seasons, both with the Braves, and he owns a career 3.23 ERA, 7.4 K/9 rate and 3.4 BB/9 rate in 183 2/3 innings across 166 appearances.

Ortiz, whose only major-league action came in 2013 with the Rangers, has given up four earned runs in 10 2/3 innings for Triple-A Iowa while striking out just one batter and walking five. He'll likely be reassigned to Iowa if he clears waivers.

Red Sox promote two, demote two in Wednesday moves

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(4/29/2015) John Farrell announced Wednesday that the Red Sox have made a slew of moves, including the demotion of outfielder Jackie Bradley back to Triple-A Pawtucket a day after he had been brought up.

Farrell also told WEEI that Anthony Varvaro has been designated for assignment and that fellow right-handers Dalier Hinojosa and Tommy Layne have been recalled from the minors.

Bradley is still trying to display his potential at the big-league level after batting .198 in 384 at-bats with Boston a year ago. Varvaro punched his ticket back by giving up four runs on eight hits in his last 3 1/3 innings pitched.

Red Sox pitcher Anthony Varvaro could be lefty specialist this year

by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(3/7/2015) Red Sox pitcher Anthony Varvaro could become a specialist out of Boston's bullpen this season, reports MLB.com. Varvaro, who was traded from the Braves during the offseason, said he feels very comfortable pitching to lefties.

"When I saw that first lefty step in there, it's like a comfort zone," said Varvaro. "I'm like, 'Here he is.' Then the next one, perfect. And then the third one, I'm like, 'Did they set this up to roll this way to really see [how I am against lefties]'? For some reason, I've pitched better against lefties. I don't want to say why I think that is so other people maybe catch on. I don't want to say it's a comfort zone, but I tend to have more success against lefties."

Vavaro kept left-handed hitters to a .149 average in 2014 while allowing .273 to righties. Manager John Farrell wouldn't give away whether he was face exclusively lefties during the season.

"Once again, he was powerful and with good late action to attack both lefties and righties," said manager John Farrell. "Varvaro, I thought, was powerful."

Anthony Varvaro earns win in 10-inning game Monday

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Wirfin Obispo up for Atlanta bullpen spot, too

by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com
(3/26/2013) Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said following Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against the Tigers that Wirfin Obispo is a candidate for one of the last remaining bullpen spots, reports MLB.com.

Obispo went an inning against the Tigers Tuesday and struck out two with a hit. The 28-year-old has not allowed a run this spring over five innings with seven Ks. He joins Cristhian Martinez and Anthony Varvaro as possibilities for the last remaining bullpen spot.

Braves looking to finalize bullpen spots

by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com
(3/26/2013) Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez continues to insist that Jordan Walden, who missed a month of the Grapefruit season due to a bulging disk in his back, will be in the bullpen on opening day against Philadelphia.

Should that actually come to pass, one but not both of Anthony Varvaro and Cristhian Martinez can make the team. Both would make it with Walden on the shelf. Atlanta could look into trading one of the relievers if Walden is definitely healthy, reports MLB.com, as both relievers are out of options and would have to pass through waivers to remain with the organization if sent down.

Martinez could have the advantage in remaining with the Braves as he has proven his ability to work in multiple different roles over the last two years. Varvaro, however, has had an excellent spring up until Monday's outing.
