Yankees mull bullpen options

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(5/2/2013) Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said the team is mulling its roster options after placing reliever Joba Chamberlain (oblique) on the disabled list Thursday. Cashman said Chien-Ming Wang is not in the mix to take Chamberlain's roster spot, but Mark Montgomery, Preston Claiborne and Sam Demel are candidates in the short term.

Sam Demel optioned to Triple-A

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(3/29/2013) Sam Demel, who was acquired by the Yankees earlier this week, will be heading to the minors. The Yankees have outrighted the Demel to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Friday.

The right-hander has yet to make a spring appearance with the team, but has allowed 11 runs in 2 1/3 innings of work with the Astros this spring.

Yankees acquire pitcher Sam Demel

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(3/27/2013) The Yankees have acquired pitcher Sam Demel on a waiver claim from the Astros. Demel spent most of last season in Triple-A, but does have major-league experience. Demel tossed 63 2/3 innings with the Diamondbacks from 2010 to 2012. He has a 4.95 ERA and a 4.75 FIP over those innings.

Astros cut down roster

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3/10/2013) The Astros endured their first cuts of the spring Sunday and a few of their top prospects were among the names reassigned to minor-league camp. Players reassigned Sunday were Delino DeShields Jr., Jake Goebbert, Marc Krauss, George Springer, Chris Wallace, Rudy Owens and Sam Demel. Owens is one player on the Astros' radar for a potential promotion in 2013. “The important thing for players like DeShields and Springer, who are a part of our future, was to come up here and make a good impression with a new staff and both of them absolutely did that,” Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow said, per MLB.com. “Goebbert has been a part of our minor league system for a while and made a good impression, and Krauss had some big hits for us. The message to all those guys basically is you accomplished what your goal was this spring, you came up here and made a good impression on the staff. For all those guys, they did exactly what we wanted them to do.”
