"[The ball is] coming out of his hand pretty good," Cubs manager Dale Sveum said. "He's a middle-of-the-season-type guy. He'll be ready in the middle of the season."

Vizcaino, who was acquired in a deal with Atlanta prior to last year's trade deadline, underwent reconstructive elbow surgery last April and will focus on building arm strength this year. He is expected to remain in extended spring training after camp.

Jason McLeod, the team's senior vice president of scouting and player development, told MLB.com that Vizcaino's future with the team is in the starting rotation. "He has shown electric stuff with the fastball and his power breaking pitch," McLeod said. "At his age, we want to give him every chance to start."
