Mets C Johnny Monell makes first career start on Friday

(5/15/2015) Mets rookie Johnny Monell will make his first start of the season, as he'll be the starting catcher and bat seventh on Friday against the Brewers.

Monell was called up from Triple-A on May 5 and has been used as a pinch-hitter and late-inning defensive replacement. So far he has one hit (a two-run double) in his first five at-bats. He is starting in place of Kevin Plawecki who has been struggling at the plate.

Monell was hitting well in Triple-A this season, batting .397 in 17 games for Las Vegas.

(5/10/2015) Mets catcher Johnny Monell has only taken two at-bats in 2015, but made one count on Sunday, delivering a two-run double in the eighth inning in Philadelphia.

"I just knew that guys in front of me were getting on and I would have an opportunity with some people on base to hit," Monell said to the New York Post. "I ended up squaring up pretty good and it ends up in the gap, scoring two and giving us a little cushion going into the ninth."

Monell hit .397 with Triple-A Las Vegas before getting called up to New York.

(5/5/2015) The Mets optioned third baseman Eric Campbell to Triple-A Las Vegas Tuesday and selected the contract of catcher Johnny Monell, the team announced.

Campbell drew 15 straight starts at third base after David Wright hit the disabled list, but the team chose Friday to move Daniel Murphy to third base and play Dilson Herrera at second, an alignment to which they stuck throughout the weekend. Campbell hit just .200/.323/.320 with one home run and five RBI in 50 at-bats.

Monell will give the Mets another lefty bat off the bench moving forward. He has hit .397/.455/.638 with four home runs and 15 RBI in 58 at-bats with Triple-A Las Vegas.


Mets set to promote catcher Johnny Monell

(5/4/2015) The Mets will promote catcher Johnny Monell prior to Tuesday's game against the Orioles. It is unknown what the corresponding move will be.

The 29-year-old Monell is batting .397 (23 for 58) with a .455 on-base percentage, .638 slugging percentage and 1.092 OPS in 17 games for Triple-A Las Vegas. He also has two doubles, four home runs and 15 RBI.

Monell spent time with the Orioles and Dodgers last season. He hit .238/.301/.364 over 206 at-bats in Triple-A.

(5/28/2014) The Dodgers have acquired catcher Johnny Monell from the Orioles, a source has told SB Nation. What was provided in return has yet to be revealed.

The 28-year-old Monell has struggled at Triple-A Norfolk this season. He owns a stat line of .209/.280/286. He has earned just eight at-bats in the major leagues during his career.

He has been assigned to Triple-A Albuquerque, according to the Baltimore Sun.

(3/19/2014) The Orioles have optioned catcher Johnny Monell to minor league camp, leaving Steve Clevenger as the lone backup to starter Matt Wieters at that position.

Monell performed well enough at the plate this spring, batting .278 with one home run and six RBI in 18 at-bats. But he was outhit by Clevenger, who boasts the same power numbers with a .545 batting average that tops the Orioles among players with more than three plate appearances.

(2/5/2014) Orioles newcomers such as second baseman Jemile Weeks and catcher Johnny Monell must show their versatility by playing multiple positions to maximize their chances of making the team out of spring training, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Weeks will compete with Ryan Flaherty for the starting job, but could earn a spot if he proves himself at shortstop and third base, where Alexi Casilla is also competing. Monell will battle Steve Clevenger for the backup role to Matt Wieters, but could also score points with Buck Showalter if he proves himself worthy at other positions.
