Red Sox sign Mike McCoy, Tommy Layne

(11/16/2013) The Red Sox have signed infielder Mike McCoy and left-handed pitcher Tommy Layne to minor-league deals, the Boston Globe reports.

McCoy has hit .190/.273/.256 with three home runs, 20 RBI and 21 stolen bases in 336 at-bats over four seasons in the majors. He spent all of 2013 in Triple-A, hitting .245/.357/.327 with four home runs, 22 RBI and 29 stolen bases in 355 at-bats.

Layne made 14 appearances with the Padres last season, going 0-2 with a 2.08 ERA, 1.73 WHIP and 6:5 K:BB ratio in 8 2/3 innings. He also made 49 appearances with Triple-A Tuscon, going 2-4 with a 4.50 ERA, 1.65 WHIP and 41:27 K:BB ratio in 46 innings.


Padres make series of roster moves

(11/4/2013) The San Diego Padres made a series of roster moves Monday as they reinstated pitchers Casey Kelly, Jason Marquis and catcher Yasmani Grandal from the 60-day disabled list. Marquis then declared for free agency.

Infielder Ronny Cedeno and outfielder Mark Kotsay also declared free agency. Kotsay said he was going to retire back in September after 17 seasons, including two stints in San Diego. Pitcher Tommy Layne, who had been designated for assignment last week, has been outrighted to Triple-A Reno.

Kelly and Grandal are both coming off major surgeries. Kelly, the team's No. 3 prospect, according to MLB.com, had reconstructive surgery on his right elbow in April. He won't be ready for the 2014 regular season. Grandal had surgery to repair his right anterior cruciate ligament Aug. 6. He said he expects to be ready for spring training.

(10/25/2013) The San Diego Padres have designated left-handed pitchers Colt Hynes and Tommy Layne for assigment in order to make room for Cory Luebke and Joe Wieland on the 40-man roster. 

Hynes, 28, made his major league debut in 2013, with a 9.00 ERA and 2.00 WHIP in 17 innings. he had compiled a 3.59 ERA over seven seasons in the minors, all with the Padres. 

Layne, who will be 29 next week, has pitched in the past two seasons for San Diego, producing a 2.84 ERA and 1.07 WHIP in 40 games. He also recorded 31 strikeouts in 25 1/3 IP.

(9/1/2013) The Padres recalled pitcher Tommy Layne and catcher Chris Robinson from Triple-A Tucson Sunday. Layne has a 2.45 ERA in nine relief appearances, while Robinson has yet to make an appearance for San Diego.

(6/28/2013) The Padres have optioned Tommy Layne to Triple-A Tucson, MLB.com reports. Layne has been successful, with a 2.45 ERA in 7 1/3 innings in relief, but the club opted for the right-handed arm in Burch Smith for now. Expect Layne to bounce between the minors and majors this year.

(6/24/2013) The Padres have recalled relief pitcher Tommy Layne from Triple-A Tucson, MLB.com reports.

Layne, 28, has experienced short major league stints over the last two seasons. Overall he owns a 2.82 ERA in 32 games with 29 strikeouts against three walks. He has spent most of the season with Tucson, where he owns a 4.03 ERA and 1.14 K/BB.

(5/24/2013) The Padres recalled reliever Tom Layne from Triple-A Tucson Friday to take the open spot on the roster created when Burch Smith was optioned.

Layne pitched in 26 games for the Padres last season, with a 3.24 ERA in 16 2/3 innings. He had a 4.00 ERA at Triple-A before being called up.

(9/6/2012) Padres reliever Tom Layne secured his second save of the season during Wednesday's contest against the Dodgers. Layne was summoned in the ninth inning with two outs after Luke Gregerson plunked Shane Victorino. He forced Adrain Gonzalez to ground out to secure a 3-2 victory. Layne improved his ERA to 1.74 on the year.
