Report: Giants sign trio of minor free agents

(12/5/2014) The Giants have signed outfielder Justin Maxwell, right-hander Cory Gearrin and southpaw Nik Turley to free agent contracts, Baseball America has reported.

Maxwell managed just six hits in 40 at-bats for Kansas City in 2014. Gearrin lost the season to elbow surgery while Turley spent the year in the Yankees minor league system and has yet to pitch in the big leagues.


Braves activate four from disabled list

(11/1/2014) The Braves have activated four players from the 60-day disabled list Friday.

Jonny Venters, Kris Medlen, Brandon Beachy and Cory Gearrin were all taken off the disabled list. All four players had Tommy John surgery during the year. Medlen, Beachy and Gearrin underwent the surgery in March or April. Venters had his third Tommy John in August.

(4/8/2014) Braves reliever Cory Gearrin will miss the 2014 season because of Tommy John surgery. Gearrin has been sidelined since hurting his elbow late in spring training.

"It's tough. Now I just have to focus on putting the (rehab) work in and come back next year," he said, per the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Gearrin is likely headed for Tommy John surgery, but he wants to get another opinion before making a final decision. He's on the 60-day disabled list and will miss the entire 2014 season.

Gearrin is expected to undergo Tommy John surgery, and will likely miss the entire year so he can rehab. The team needed to make the move in order to move Pedro Beato to the 40-man roster.

(3/29/2014) The battered Braves pitching staff confirmed another casualty Saturday when right-handed reliever Cory Gearrin was placed on the disabled list with a spained right elbow. He might be destined for Tommy John surgery, MLBDailyDish.com has speculated.

Gearrin, who was removed from the game Tuesday with the elbow issue, took a step back last season after a fine performance in limited appearances in 2012. Control became an issue in 2013, when he walked 16 and hit four batters in 31 innings.
