(11/25/2014) The Phillies announced Tuesday they signed pitcher Paul Clemens, catcher Rene Garcia, catcher Koyie Hill, infielder Chris Nelson and infielder Cord Phelps to minor-league contracts. All five players received invites to spring training as non-roster invitees.

Phelps played in only four games with the Indians in 2013, but over three seasons with the club, he batted .159 with two home runs in 113 at-bats.

(11/20/2013) The Indians added first baseman Jesus Aguilar, infielder Erik Gonzalez, outfielder Carlos Moncrief and pitchers Austin Adams and Bryan Price to the 40-man roster Wednesday. The team also designated infielder Cord Phelps for assignment.

Aguilar hit .275/.349/.427 with 16 home runs and 105 RBI in 499 at-bats with Double-A Akron last season. Gonzalez hit .254/.293/.417 with nine home runs, 76 RBI and 11 stolen bases in 508 at-bats between Class A Lake County and high Class A Carolina. Moncrief hit .284/.354/.470 with 17 home runs, 75 RBI and 15 stolen bases in 489 at-bats with Double-A Akron.

Adams went 3-2 with a 2.62 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 76:29 K:BB ratio in 55 innings with Double-A Akron. Price went 2-3 with a 2.04 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 92:16 K:BB ratio in 75 innings between Double-A Akron and Triple-A Columbus.

Phelps went 0 for 9 in four appearances with the Indians while also hitting .267/.333/.443 with nine home runs and 46 RBI with Triple-A Columbus.

Phelps only appeared in the majors for nine at-bats, and spent most of his season in the minors. He was shut down in August with wrist inflammation.

The team's starting second baseman, Jason Kipnis, was scratched from his third-straight game Tuesday. Although his injury is considered day-to-day, it's somewhat worrisome to see Phelps promoted. Mike Aviles will start at second base Tuesday, but Phelps could see time at the position if Kipnis misses a few more games.

Cord Phelps making case for opening day roster spot

(3/20/2013) Indians second baseman Cord Phelps collected a double and a single in four at-bats against the Angels Wednesday to raise his spring average to .341.

Phelps is in the mix to make the team's opening-day roster, which has one or two available spots remaining.

"Regardless of whether he makes our team or not," manager Terry Francona told MLB.com Wednesday, "he's played to the point where he's going to help us win games, which we're thrilled about. I know we have decisions to make coming up in a couple weeks, but we're so happy with the way he's played."
