Phillies release outfielder Dave Sappelt

(4/3/2014) The Phillies have released outfielder Dave Sappelt Thursday, according to SBNation.

Sappelt joined the club on a minor-league deal during the offseason, but failed to break camp with the major-league team. He'll attempt to sign on with a team that can give him a better opportunity for playing time. 


Phillies bring four aboard on minors deals

(12/18/2013) The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that the Phillies signed the following players to minor league deals Wednesday: catcher Lou Marson, outfielders Tony Gwynn and Dave Sappelt and pitcher Sean O'Sullivan. Each player received a spring training invite.

Marson began his major league career with the Phillies, but has spent the last four-and-a-half seasons with the Indians.

Gwynn spent most of 2013 at Triple-A Albuquerque in the Dodgers' system, hitting .300 with 12 steals. Sappelt appeared in 31 games with the Cubs and compiled a .240 batting average.

O'Sullivan made three starts and four relief appearances for the Padres last season and went 0-2 with a 3.96 ERA.

(9/3/2013) The Cubs recalled pitchers Justin Grimm, Brooks Raley and catcher J.C. Boscan from Triple-A Iowa prior to Tuesday's game against the Marlins, according to MLB.com. In addition the team also selected pitcher Zach Rosscup from Iowa and designated Dave Sappelt for assignment.

Grimm was 2-3 with a 4.68 ERA in eight starts for Iowa. Raley was 8-10 with one save in 27 games (25 starts) for Iowa. Boscan batted .232 in 74 games at Iowa

(7/24/2013) The Cubs have optioned outfielder Dave Sappelt to Triple-A Iowa to clear a 25-man roster spot for David DeJesus, who was activated from the 15-day disabled list Wednesday.

Sappelt has hit .240/.269/.280 in 75 at-bats with the Cubs. He returns to a .269/.311/.398 line in 186 at-bats at the Triple-A level.

Sweeney batted .337 with six homers and six RBI in 23 games at Triple-A.

Sappelt, who found out Friday that he has earned a spot on the 25-man roster, is batting .182 (8 for 44) with three homers, nine RBI and two stolen bases in 19 spring games.

"It was my job to lose coming into spring training and I had to get back on track hitting-wise, and show them I could play center because it's a big role that somebody is going to have to be able to fill," Sappelt told MLB.com Saturday.

(3/18/2013) Cubs outfielder Dave Sappelt hit his third home run of the Cactus League on Monday against the Padres. He launched a three-run shot off Clayton Richard in the fifth inning for his only hit in the 5-2 win.

Sappelt, who is competing for a spot on the bench, is batting .205 (8 for 39) this spring with nine RBI and two stolen bases.

"The last three days I’ve been putting it together and not putting pressure on myself,” Sappelt told ESPN.com. “I shouldn't have pressure on me. ... Obviously, we all know there are two spots open. One is probably an outfielder and one is probably an infielder. I guess I was putting pressure on myself. I had to tell myself it's spring training and just get ready for April 1, not Feb. 20.”

Sappelt hitting well since promotion


(9/13/2012) Cubs outfielder Dave Sappelt extended his modest hitting streak to four games in Wednesday's series finale against the Astros. He went 3 for 3 with a walk and a run scored in the 5-1 win. Since being called up from Triple-A Iowa when rosters expanded, Sappelt has gone 7 for 20 (.350) with three RBI and three runs scored.
