Marlins shuffle roster following loss to Reds

(7/31/2014) The Marlins announced several roster moves following Thursday's loss to Cincinnati. The team optioned Dan Jennings and Ed Lucas down to Triple-A New Orleans. The team will promote Jarred Cosart and Kike Hernandez. Cosart will make his season debut Friday night against the Reds.

DeSclafani struggled in a stint in the bigs earlier this season. He managed just one quality start in five outings and compiled a 7.40 ERA before being dispatched to the minors.

Lucas stepped to the plate with a man on in the second inning. He worked a six-pitch at-bat from Paul Maholm, homering to left on an 88 mph fastball. Lucas later singled during the game. He finished 2 for 6, with two runs scored and two RBI. Lucas is hitting .280.

(4/25/2014) Marlins infielder Ed Lucas began his minor-league rehab assignment Friday night for Class A Jupiter. Lucas had an eventful night, reaching base three times.

Lucas played shortstop on Friday and is expected to play in as many positions as possible while in the minors, according to the Palm Beach Post. He finished 1 for 3 with two walks, three runs scored and an RBI in his first game action since suffering a broken hand.

(4/14/2014) The Marlins updated the status of three injured players Monday, per MLB.com.

Second baseman Rafael Furcal (hamstring) will begin a rehab assignment with Class A Jupiter Monday. 

"The plan is for him to hopefully play every day," manager Mike Redmond said. "Hopefully, he continues to feel good. He will be there all week. The plan for him is to use all 21 days (on his rehab assignment)."

Infielder Ed Lucas (hand) has been cleared for some baseball activities.

"We’ll just kind of monitor him on how that hand is feeling," Redmond said. "We’ll see how much activity he can do day to day."

Starting pitcher Jacob Turner (shoulder) is expected to play catch Tuesday.

"He’s feeling much better than he has," Redmond said.

(3/31/2014) Marlins infielder Ed Lucas will have a pin surgically placed in his broken hand Wednesday, the Miami Herald reports.

The report says that Lucas is expected to miss four weeks, which would be the low end of the previously announced timetable for his return. He was hit on the hand by a pitch Thursday after making the 25-man roster earlier in the day.

(3/27/2014) Marlins third baseman Ed Lucas had a bittersweet day Thursday, but the bitter outweighed the sweet.

Hours after being told he made the team, he was hit by a pitch on the left hand. It has since been diagnosed that he sustained a non-displaced fracture.

The injury will result in Donovan Solano, whom Lucas beat out for the job, returning to the major league team and serving in that role, per MLB.com.

Lucas hit a solo home run in the first inning, the first of his major-league career, while going 3 for 4. He scored once, drove in a run and added a walk.

Lucas, 31, has never played in the majors, and has a .304 batting average and .807 OPS at New Orleans this season. He has played every position on the field except catcher and pitcher at least once in his minor-league career.
