Report: Mets still in market to sign closer-type reliever

(2/3/2014) The Mets are still in the market to sign a closer-type reliever, a source unaffiliated with the club told ESPN. The source believes Fernando Rodney is the team's top target, but the team would likely consider Kevin Gregg, Ryan Madson and Joel Hanrahan as well.

Closer Bobby Parnell has expressed confidence in bouncing back from neck surgery, but the Mets don't have much of a safety net.

(11/6/2013) Cubs catcher Dioner Navarro, relief pitcher Kevin Gregg, starting pitcher Scott Baker and relief pitcher Matt Guerrier have filed before free agency. Gregg played the biggest role of the three in 2013, recording 33 saves, but ceded the closer role to Pedro Strop at the end of the season.

Epstein has decided not to release Gregg at this time. Gregg has saved 32 games for the Cubs while posting a 3.45 ERA in 60 innings.

President of baseball operations Theo Epstein met with Gregg Friday and is upset with the tirade, enough to consider releasing Gregg, ESPN Chicago reports.

Gregg has saved 32 games for the Cubs while posting a 3.45 ERA in 60 innings.

Gregg dropped to 2-5 after taking the loss in the game, in which he matched a season-worst four-run performance from July 14. He owns a 3.45 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 50:32 K:BB ratio in 60 innings.

Gregg earned his 31st save of the season for the Cubs as he needed 16 pitches to record three outs. His ERA is now at 3.00 on the year.

The closer has saves in four straight appearances, but has allowed four runs over his last 10. Still, the 35-year-old has done his job for the Cubs this season.

Gregg allowed a run-scoring single to Ronny Cedeno in the 13th inning and allowed him to score on a wild pitch. He was charged with two runs on two hits over one inning pitched in a 3-2 defeat in 15 innings.

Gregg (2-2), who entered a tied game in the ninth, surrendered a run-scoring single to Allen Craig and a three-run home run to Yadier Molina that broke the game open. He was charged with four runs on four hits over one inning in a 10-6 defeat.

Gregg has a 2.97 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP through his first 33 1/3 innings at the All-Star break.
