Astros make a few roster decisions Thursday

(10/9/2014) The Astros announced Thursday they outrighted first baseman Jesus Guzman and pitcher Rudy Owens off the 40-man roster. The team also announced it declined the $3 million team option on pitcher Matt Albers' contract.

(6/13/2014) The Astros have promoted right-hander Josh Zeid from Triple-A Oklahoma City and demoted lefty Rudy Owens to the same team.

Zeid pitched decently in seven games with Houston early in the year. He gave up three runs in seven innings with eight strikeouts.

Owens allowed five runs on nine hits in 5 2/3 innings in his lone appearance for the Astros earlier in the season.

(5/24/2014) Astros pitcher Rudy Owens was hit hard in his first big-league start and as pegged with the loss Friday night against the Mariners in Seattle.

Owens surrendered a two-run home run to Willie Bloomquist in the sixth, which proved to be the biggest blow. He permitted five runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out one in 5 2/3 innings of a 6-1 defeat.

Owens was optioned back down to Triple-A Oklahoma City. He went 2-3 with a 6.05 ERA in 41 2/3 innings at Triple-A.

(5/23/2014) Left-handed pitcher Rudy Owens has been called up by the Astros from Triple-A Oklahoma City to make the Friday night start in Seattle. Right-hander Josh Zeid has been demoted to the same team.

Owens has not distinguished himself with the RedHawks this season. He is 2-3 with a 6.05 ERA and has surrendered 51 hits in 41 2/3 innings. He has yielded just just eight walks, but gave up eight earned runs in three innings in his last start.

(4/26/2013) Astros pitching prospect Rudy Owens is expected to be sidelined 4-5 months due to a stress fracture in his left foot, the Houston Chronicle reported Friday. Owen, who is scheduled to undergo surgery on his foot next Monday in Houston, was 0-3 with a 3.71 ERA in 17 innings with Triple-A Oklahoma City.

(3/10/2013) The Astros endured their first cuts of the spring Sunday and a few of their top prospects were among the names reassigned to minor-league camp. Players reassigned Sunday were Delino DeShields Jr., Jake Goebbert, Marc Krauss, George Springer, Chris Wallace, Rudy Owens and Sam Demel. Owens is one player on the Astros' radar for a potential promotion in 2013. “Owens came over in a trade and he’s a rotation guy that will start the season in Triple-A, and we have to give him an opportunity to get build up," manager Bo Porter said, per MLB.com.
