Pirates announce several roster moves Monday

(9/1/2014) The Pirates have promoted catcher Tony Sanchez from Triple-A Indianapolis on Monday. Additionally, the team reinstated right-hander Stolmy Pimentel from the disabled list. The team also selected contract of right-hander John Holdzkom and optioned him to Triple-A. Chris McGuiness was designated for assignment to open a spot on 40-man roster.

(8/21/2014) Pirates reliever Stolmy Pimentel tosssed a scoreless inning during a rehab start Thursday.

Pimental got the start for the Double-A club in Altoona. He threw a perfect inning, picking up one strikeout. Pimental threw nine pitches, seven of which were strikes.

Pimentel will throw one inning with the Double-A club in Altoona. He'll start Thursday's game and toss an inning. Pimentel has been out since August 13 with an ankle injury. He's posted a 5.40 ERA over 31 2/3 innings.

(8/15/2014) Pirates pitcher Stolmy Pimentel has been placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday with a sprained right ankle, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Pimental suffered the injury while throwing a pitch during Wednesday's game.

Pimentel heads to the DL with a 5.40 ERA in 31 2/3 innings out of the bullpen. A timetable for his return is not yet known.

Pimental is dealing with lower body soreness. He's expected to hit the disabled list Friday. Pimental has a 5.40 ERA over 31 2/3 innings.

(5/23/2014) Pirates reliever Stolmy Pimentel will begin a minor-league rehab assignment with Class A Bradenton next week, MLB.com reports Friday.

Pimentel, working his way back from right shoulder inflammation, moved to Florida Friday to continue his rehabilitation. He will throw live batting practice followed by a one-inning simulated game, with a rehab assignment at Bradenton the next step.

(5/20/2014) Pirates reliever Stolmy Pimentel tossed another bullpen session Tuesday, and has been cleared to move on in his recovery from a shoulder injury.

Manager Clint Hurdle told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Pimentel will move on to a minor-league rehab assignment next, though the exact details are not known. He will throw one more side session with the major-league team before moving on.

Pimentel will throw again Monday. If that goes well, he'll head to the team's complex in Florida to begin his rehab. He's been dealing with shoulder inflammation since early May. Pimentel posted a 3.18 ERA in 11 1/3 innings before the injury.

(5/3/2014) The Pirates made several roster moves Saturday, including the placement of reliever Stolmy Pimentel on the disabled list with right shoulder inflammation and the promotion of right-hander Jared Hughes from Triple-A Indianapolis.

The team also called up Vin Mazzaro and optioned fellow pitcher Brandon Cumpton. The latter was touched for four earned runs in 5 2/3 innings of a start Thursday in Baltimore.

(4/26/2014) Pirates pitcher Stolmy Pimentel logged two-plus innings of work and collected second win of the season Saturday afternoon against the Cardinals in St. Louis.

Pimentel (2-0) relieved Francisco Liriano, who left the game with flu-like symptoms. He allowed a run-scoring double to Matt Holliday for his only blemish of the afternoon. He was charged with one run on two hits and two walks while striking out three over 2 2/3 innings pitched. He owns a 2.38 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP over 11 1/3 innings pitched.

(4/3/2014) Pirates pitcher Stolmy Pimentel secured his first win of the season Wednesday, pitching the final four innings of his team's 4-3, 16-inning defeat of the Cubs.

Pimentel held the Cubs scoreless while giving up two hits and three walks over his four frames, striking out four. He allowed two earned runs on 9 1/3 innings in five appearances with the Pirates last season, his first in the majors.

(3/27/2014) Pirates pitcher Stolmy Pimentel only lasted four innings in his final Grapefruit League outing, suffering his first lost of the spring against the Yankees.

Pimentel allowed run-scoring singles to Zoilo Almonte, Ichiro Suzuki and Eduardo Nunez. He yielded four runs on nine hits and one walk while striking out three over four innings of work.

Pimentel entered camp as a worthy candidate for the bullpen. The Pirates have yet to announce whether he'll break camp with the team. He posted a 5.73 ERA and 7:1 K:BB ratio over 11 frames.

(3/22/2014) Pirates prospect Stolmy Pimentel continued to make a decent pitch for a roster spot by making a lot of good pitches against Philadelphia on Saturday. Those that were not good, however, landed over the fence.

Pimentel rebounded from a first inning in which he surrendered two runs by yielding just one more in the next four innings. He walked none and struck out three, but was hampered by the long ball. All his runs came via solo blasts by Jimmy Rollins, Cody Asche and Ryan Howard.

Pimentel owns a 3.33 ERA with 62 strikeouts in 92 innings for Indianapolis and posted a 3.61 mark in 77 1/3 innings at Double-A Altoona. He'll work out of Pittsburgh's bullpen down the stretch.

(7/29/2013) Pirates manager Clint Hurdle has decided who will start Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Cardinals, however, he didn't reveal the decision prior to Monday's game. The choices are Stolmy Pimentel and Brandon Cumpton.

Cumpton has pitched for Pittsburgh this season, going 0-1 with a 4.02 ERA in three starts. Pimentel has yet to make his MLB debut, but is 6-6 with a 3.20 ERA in 21 starts between Double-A and Triple-A.
