Mariners RP Charlie Furbush (rotator tear) like done for year

(8/21/2015) The Mariners have announced that left-handed reliever Charlie Furbush has a slight tear in his rotator cuff and is likely out for the season, per the Tacoma News-Tribune.

Furbush had been effective when given the opportunity in 2015 with a 2.08 ERA and just nine hits allowed in 21 2/3 innings. But he has been sidelined for six weeks.

(8/16/2015) Mariners pitcher Charlie Furbush is still bothered by soreness in his left biceps and will see team doctors on Sunday, reports MLB.com.

"His bullpen did not go well," manager Lloyd McClendon said Sunday. "We decided to send him back and let the doctor do his thing, evaluate, and we should know more on Wednesday."

The injury has sidelined him since July 7.

Furbush tested the injury with his first throwing session off a mound since suffering the injury on July 7. 

"Just 10 pitches," Furbush said, per the News Tribune. "This was a, 'Let's see what's happening. Let's see where I am.' Honestly, it was encouraging. It had been a while, but it felt pretty good."

Furbush will throw again on Thursday.

Furbush recently suffered a setback from a biceps issue, but is hoping to throw a bullpen session Wednesday.

"He's getting better," manager Lloyd McClendon said. "He was set back a little, but he is going to do some bullpen sessions and hopefully he'll pass the tests and be ready to go [soon]."

He earned his first win of the season in Tuesday's extra-innings victory over the Tigers.

Red Sox GM denies reports of possible Jackie Bradley trade offer

(5/15/2015) With the Red Sox currently in Seattle taking on the Mariners in a four-game series, reports of a proposed Jackie Bradley-for-Charlie Furbush offseason trade have re-surfaced. However, Red Sox general manager immediately refuted these reports on Friday, indicating via text message that these reports are "simply false", according to ESPN.com.

It had been reported earlier in the spring by a source with one of the clubs that the Mariners rejected the proposal from the Red Sox, but it seems that no such offer had been made, or rejected. 

Bradley has been the source of a number of trade rumors recently, given the Red Sox surplus of outfielders, and need for pitching. 

 


Report: Mariners, Austin Jackson agree to $7.7-million deal

(1/16/2015) The Mariners have avoided arbitration with outfielder Austin Jackson by agreeing to a one-year deal worth $7.7 million, the Seattle Times reports.

The team was able to avoid arbitration with five players in all Friday by agreeing to the terms of one-year contracts for each player. First basman Logan Morrison is scheduled to make $2.725 million with incentives for reaching 500 and 600 plate appearances. Outfielder Dustin Ackley will take in $2.6 million as well as another $50,000 bonus for reaching 500 plate appearances.

Outfielder Justin Ruggiano, who was acquired from the Cubs earlier this offseason, will make $2.5 million and can earn another $20,000 if he reaches 375 plate appearances. Pitcher Charlie Furbush will earn $1.3 million.

(7/20/2014) Mariners pitcher Charlie Furbush earned his first career save Saturday, recording the final three outs of his team's 3-2, 12-inning win over the Angels.

With regular closer Fernando Rodney used earlier in the game, the Mariners turned to Furbush in the 12th inning after another reliever surrendered a leadoff home run in the inning. He rattled off three straight outs to finish off the win. Furbush owns a 3.81 ERA and 27:5 K:BB ratio in 28 1/3 innings.

(4/27/2014) Mariners pitcher Charlie Furbush hit the only batter he faced Saturday, which was enough to earn him a loss as his team fell to the Rangers, 6-3.

Furbush (0-2) began the eighth inning by plunking Prince Fielder, and he was promptly removed thereafter with the game tied 3-3. Fielder would come around to score the go-ahead run, and the Mariners weren't able to come back and tie the game up. Furbush owns a 6.43 ERA and 5:3 K:BB ratio in seven innings.

"As of right now, maybe like in the past, we'll piece it together and match up and go from there," acting manager Robby Thompson told MLB.com Friday. "Those games like that and even closer games where we've got the lead, we've got to find a way to win the ballgame."

Thompson said Oliver Perez, Charlie Furbush, Yoervis Medina and Danny Farquhar could all see closing chances while the team tries to sort out the back of the bullpen.

Furbush came into the game in the top of the 13 inning, and struck out three batters. Furbush remained in the game in the 14, but immediately gave up a hit and walked a batter. Blake Beavan was brought in to try and limit to damage, but allowed one of Furbush's runs to score.
