Rockies sign five pitchers to minor league contracts

Ortega has been pitching at Triple-A Toledo since May, after he gave up four runs in 1 1/3 innings in the majors.

(5/5/2014) The Tigers optioned pitcher Jose Ortega to Triple-A Toledo Monday to clear a roster spot for Tuesday starter Robbie Ray.

Ortega, who didn't pitch in Monday's win, made just one appearances with the Tigers before being sent back down. He gave up four earned runs in 1 1/3 innings, walking four and hitting a batter without surrendering a hit.

(4/26/2014) Tigers pitcher Jose Ortega (0-1) was hit with the loss in his season debut Saturday afternoon against the Twins.

Ortega filled in for Anibal Sanchez, who left the game in the third with a blister on his right middle finger. Ortega had some command issues as he struck out one, walked four and allowed four runs without allowing a hit over 1 1/3 innings of work in a 5-3 defeat.

Ortega will likely serve as a fresh bullpen arm. The club used five relievers during Friday's game, and is looking for someone to soak up some innings. Ortega has a 3.97 ERA in 11 1/3 innings in the minors.

(3/23/2014) The Tigers announced Sunday they optioned pitcher Kyle Lobstein, pitcher Jose Ortega and shortstop Eugenio Suarez to Triple-A Toledo. They also reassigned catcher John Murrian, catcher Craig Albernaz, outfielder Ezequiel Carrera and outfielder Trevor Crowe to minor-league camp.

(6/8/2013) Tigers pitcher Jose Ortega was optioned to Triple-A Toledo after Saturday's win over the Indians, clearing a 25-man roster spot for Jose Alvarez, who is Sunday's projected starter.

Ortega went 0-2 with a 3.86 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 10:6 K:BB ratio in 11 2/3 innings over 11 appearances with the Tigers. He returns to a 1-0 record, 0.00 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 19:7 K:BB ratio in 14 innings with Toledo.

(5/14/2013) Tigers manager Jim Leyland told reporters that reliever Jose Ortega will not be available out of the bullpen Tuesday night against the Astros.

Ortega, who pitched two innings Monday against Houston and one-third of an inning Sunday against Cleveland, has not allowed a run since he was recalled from Triple-A. He has allowed two hits in 6 2/3 innings and has a 0.47 WHIP through his first five appearances.

With Phil Coke on the disabled list with a groin injury, Ortega has been called up to take his place. Ortega, 24, pitched 2 2/3 innings with the major-league club last season. In Triple-A, he's thrown 14 innings without giving up a run this year. He's struck out 19 batters.

Detroit also reassigned outfielders Nick Castellanos and Tyler Collins, shortstop Argenis Diaz and pitcher Trevor Bell to its minor-league camp.

(2/16/2013) Tigers reliever Jose Ortega drew rare praise from manager Jim Leyland during Saturday's bullpen session, according to MLB.com. "I know one thing: Of the guys I watched today, I would not have wanted to be hitting off of Ortega," Leyland said. "He's throwing great. Oh boy, he's got nasty stuff."
