Astros adding five to expanded roster

(9/2/2014) The Astros are set to call up five players to the majors to take advantage of expanded rosters, MLB.com reports Tuesday.

The team will add outfielder L.J. Hoes, shortstop Jonathan Villar, catcher Max Stassi and pitchers Nick Tropeano and Jorge De Leon to the active roster as early as Tuesday.

(9/1/2014) The Astros will recall infielder Jonathan Villar, catcher Max Stassi and pitcher Nick Tropeano and Jorge De Leon Tuesday when rosters expand, the Houston Chronicle reports.

The team will need to clear two 40-man roster spots for the pitchers. Villar hit .200/.255/.342 with six home runs, 22 RBI and 14 stolen bases in 225 at-bats with Houston before being sent to the minors.

(2/27/2014) Astros pitcher Jorge De Leon faced live hitters on Thursday and told MLB.com he's feeling better. De Leon, who is recovering from a right quad strain, said he even tossed a few split-fingered fastballs with good results, according to the report.

De Leon is in search of a spot on the team's initial 25-man roster after making 11 appearances with the Astros last season.

De Leon has been dealing with a right quad strain, but he hasn't suffered any setbacks after throwing a bullpen session Monday, so he'll move forward in his pitching schedule. He's batting for a spot on the team's initial 25-man roster after making 11 appearances with the Astros last season.

(1/14/2014) The Astros invited 20 non-roster minor-leaguers to spring training Tuesday, including infielder Carlos Correa and pitcher Mark Appel, the team announced.

The team's other invitees include pitchers Jake Buchanan, Rhiner Cruz, Jorge De Leon, Bobby Doran, Mike Foltynewicz, Jason Stoffel and Nick Tropeano; catchers Rene Garcia, Tyler Heineman and Carlos Perez; infielders Japhet Amador, Jonathan Meyer and Ronald Torreyes; and outfielders Delino DeShields, Leo Heras, J.D. Martinez, George Springer and Preston Tucker.

Correa, 19, was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2012 amateur draft. He hit .320/.405/.467 with nine home runs, 86 RBI and 10 stolen bases in 450 at-bats with Class A Quad Cities last season.

Appel, 22, was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2013 amateur draft. He went 3-1 with a 3.79 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 33:9 K:BB ratio in 38 innings over 10 starts between low Class A Tri-City and Class A Quad Cities.


Astros outright Jorge De Leon off 40-man roster

(10/17/2013) The Astros outrighted pitcher Jorge De Leon off the 40-man roster Thursday. De Leon can elect to become a free agent due to having been outrighted by the team before.

De Leon, 26, made 11 appearances for the Astros in 2013, allowing six earned runs on 12 hits and seven walks while striking out six in 10 innings. He also made 41 appearances (three starts) between Double-A and Triple-A, going 0-3 with a 3.46 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 48:17 K:BB ratio in 67 2/3 innings.
