Replacing him behind the plate is Ryan Lavarnway, who gets his eighth start for the Braves.

(7/21/2015) Reserve catcher Ryan Lavarnway will get a rare start Tuesday for the Braves, giving regular catcher A.J. Pierzynski a day off after five straight starts. 

This will be Lavarnway's seventh appearance with Atlanta since being acquired from the Orioles, and he is hitting .294 with one homer in the NL, with a five-game hitting streak to his credit.

(7/11/2015) Braves catcher Ryan Lavarnway went deep for the first time in nearly two years, as he hit his first home run of the season in Saturday's 3-2 loss to the Rockies. Lavarnway knocked a solo shot in the third inning to give the Braves an early 2-0 advantage, though they wouldn't be able to hold the lead.

Lavarnway's last home run came in September 2013 as a member of the Red Sox. The once-highly regarded prospect has failed to live up to expectations in his career, and this year he has eight hits in 45 at-bats between the Braves and Orioles.

(6/15/2015) The Braves have promoted veteran Ryan Lavarnway to replace fellow catcher Christian Bethancourt on their roster, per the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

Lavarnway, who was signed by Atlanta on May 30 after a short stint with Baltimore, has been hitting well for Triple-A Gwinnett with a slash line of .268/.388/.463.

(5/30/2015) Veteran catcher Ryan Lavarnway wasn't out of work long. Four days after the Orioles designated him for assignment, he has been signed by the Braves. He will join their Triple-A Gwinnett team, the Atlanta Journal Constitution has reported.

Lavarnway earned 28 at-bats for Baltimore this season, but managed just three hits.


Orioles recall Steve Clevenger, DFA Ryan Lavarnway

(5/26/2015) The Orioles recalled catcher Steve Clevenger from Triple-A Norfolk on Tuesday. To clear a roster spot, catcher Ryan Lavarnway was designated for assignment.

Clevenger never appeared in a game for Baltimore before being demoted to the minors in early April. He hit .352 with with two home runs, three doubles and 14 RBI in 27 games. He also has 11 walks and 10 strikeouts.

"I'm excited," he said to MASN Sports. "I'm going to try and help the team anyway I can. Feeling good at the plate and I have been playing really well out there. I'm just excited to get out on the field and play here.

"I went down there on a mission," he said. "Coming into spring training this year, I wanted to focus more on my catching and I tried to do that. I went down there and played very well. Just tried to concentrate on my catching and helping the pitchers do what they can do best, and that's pitch and not worry about anything else. I was just playing solid defense down there."

Lavarnway appeared in just 10 games (eight starts) for Baltimore. He hit .107 (3 for 28) with one double, no home runs and no RBI.


J.J. Hardy, Caleb Joseph out of Orioles lineup on Sunday

(5/24/2015) Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy is out of the starting lineup on Sunday, ending a string of 15 straight starts at the position. He's replaced by Everth Cabrera, who returns to the lineup for the Orioles for the first time since May 6.

Caleb Joseph also gets a rest, replaced at catcher by Ryan Lavarnway for the eighth time this year.

(4/26/2015) The Orioles will rest three starters in Sunday's game against Boston. 

Catcher Caleb Joseph, left fielder Alejandro De Aza and right fielder Travis Snider, who have combined for 36 starts this season at their respective positions, are all out of the lineup.

Ryan Lavarnway gets his fifth start of the year at catcher, batting eighth. Delmon Young is in right, batting fourth. It's his fourth start of the year but third in four days.

Steve Pearce will play left, starting for the third time this year. He's batting sixth. 

The Orioles are +100 money line underdogs at home against Boston.

With Webb no longer taking a roster spot, the team purchased the contract of catcher Ryan Lavarnway. Webb has been dealing with a lingering knee injury.

The corresponding roster move could involve pitcher Ryan Webb, with the designated list being a possibility due to his lingering knee injury. The Orioles are also considering a trade too.

(4/5/2015) The Orioles finalized their Opening Day roster as the team made several moves on Sunday. 

Four players were placed on the 15-day disabled list: infielder J.J. Hardy (left shoulder strain), OF David Lough (left hamstring strain), infielder Jimmy Paredes (lower back strain) and C Matt Wieters (Tommy John surgery).

Three players were sent to the minor leagues. LHP T.J. McFarland was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk. C Ryan Lavarnway and OF Nolan Reimold were reassigned to minor league camp.


Lavarnway's chances of making the O's increased with Wieters injury

(3/24/2015) With Matt Wieters not expected to be fully recovered in time for Opening Day, catcher/first baseman Ryan Lavarnway's chances of breaking camp with the Orioles have increased, according to MASN Sports.

"I've been happy with my camp so far," Lavarnway said. "I think as far as where I stand, that's a better question for Buck (Showalter) or Dan (Duquette). But I feel really comfortable and I'm just trying my best."

Lavarnway was one of the four catchers manager Buck Showalter brought to spring training. With Wieters sidelined, Lavarnway could be Caleb Joseph's primary backup until Wieters is back to full strength.


Orioles invite 15 nonroster players to spring training

(2/10/2015) The Orioles announced their spring-training roster Tuesday, including 15 nonroster invitees.

Pitchers Dane De La Rosa, Hunter Harvey, Mark Hendrickson, Steve Johnson, Chris Jones and Chaz Roe will be with the team this spring. Harvey, the team's first-round pick in 2013, had his 2014 season end prematurely due to elbow tightness.

The sextet of nonroster pitchers will be joined in camp by catchers J.P. Arencibia, Ryan Lavarnway and Brian Ward; infielders Michael Almanzar, Paul Janish and Chris Parmelee; and outfielders Dariel Alvarez, Nolan Reimold and Matt Tuiasosopo .

Lavarnway was claimed by Baltimore in December, but was DFA'd on Friday in order to make room for Delmon Young. Lavarnway has already been claimed three other times this offseason, so there's a chance he'll be moving to another club soon.

Lavarnway hit .201/.249/.315 over 279 career major-league at-bats.

The former top-100 prospect hit .201 with five home runs, 17 doubles and 34 RBI in 97 games over four seasons for Boston. Lavarnway appeared in just nine games for Boston in 2014.

The team has also brought up left-hander Edwin Escobar, right-hander Heath Hembree, third baseman Garin Cecchini, outfielder Bryce Brentz and catcher Ryan Lavarnway.

Lavarnway is on the 60-day disabled list after undergoing surgery to repair a broken hamate bone in his left wrist. He was just 0 for 4 in four appearances in late May before suffering the injury.
