Red Sox promote slew of players from Pawtucket

(9/17/2014) Ballyhooed Cuban outfielder Rusney Castillo is far from the only promotion from Triple-A Pawtucket made by the Red Sox on Wednesday. But he is certainly the most significant.

The team has also brought up left-hander Edwin Escobar, right-hander Heath Hembree, third baseman Garin Cecchini, outfielder Bryce Brentz and catcher Ryan Lavarnway.

(8/8/2014) Red Sox catcher Ryan Lavarnway has resumed a rehab assignment after shutting it down in late July. He slammed three hits Thursday for Triple-A Pawtucket.

Lavarnway, who is recovering from a broken wrist, has no guarantee of joining the Red Sox upon his return to health. He has just four at-bats for the big league team this year.

Lavarnway is on the 60-day disabled list after undergoing surgery to repair a broken hamate bone in his left wrist. He was just 0 for 4 in four appearances in late May before suffering the injury.

The team need to make space for Steven Wright on the 40-man roster, which led to the decision. Wright has activated from the 60-day DL, but was sent down to Triple-A. Lavarnway is dealing with a hamate fracture.

(3/17/2014) The Red Sox are shopping catcher Ryan Lavarnway because of a crowded situation for playing time at the major-league level and Triple-A Pawtucket, an industry source told CSNNE.com.

"They're making it known he's available," a veteran National League talent evaluator said of the Red Sox.

The Red Sox have begun to work Lavarnway at first base, but his future with the team is starting to look bleak.

"I think most teams now see him as a No. 3 catcher," said an American League evaluator of Lavarnway "He could play a little first and DH, and be available if you needed someone behind the plate."

(2/26/2014) John Farrell said Wednesday that he would not hesitate to put Red Sox catcher Ryan Lavarnway at first base, the Boston Globe has reported.

Lavarnway has apparently improved defensively at that position and he hit well enough in 2013 to warrant such consideration, though he lacks power. He batted .299 last season, but just three of his 23 hits went for extra bases.

The team discussed using Lavarnway at catcher regularly before signing A.J. Pierzynksi, so he'll try to increase his positional flexibility during the spring as the Red Sox put together their final 25-man roster. He hit .299/.329/.429 with one home run and 14 RBI in 77 at-bats with the Red Sox last season.

Lavarnway singled home two runs in the sixth inning to close the game to its final score. He has eight RBI on the year with a .268 batting average. 

The 26-year-old, who was spelling Jarrod Saltalamacchia with the start, has hit in four straight games. He's gone 6 for 16 over that stretch with four RBI.
