Brewers DFA Elian Herrera; claim INF Hernan Perez off waivers

by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(6/2/2015) The Brewers announced they have claimed infielder Hernan Perez off waivers from the Tigers on Tuesday. Used mostly as a reserve infielder by the Tigers, the 24-year-old Perez has just two hits in 33 at-bats this season.

To clear room for Perez, the Brewers have designated infielder/outfielder Elian Herrera for assignment. Herrera is hitting .212 (21 for 99) with four home runs this year. He's appeared at second base, third base, right field and left field.

Brewers go with Gerardo Parra in left field against Diamondbacks

by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com
(5/31/2015) The Brewers are starting Gerardo Parra in left field for Sunday's game against the Diamondbacks.

Parra will likely be the starter in left field for a while with Khris Davis going on the disabled list due to a torn meniscus. At first base, Jason Rogers will start as Adam Lind deals with an ailing back.

Elian Herrera is starting at third base with Luis Sardinas at second.

Ryan Braun, Aramis Ramirez out of Brewers' lineup on Sunday

by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
(5/24/2015) Brewers right fielder Ryan Braun is out of the starting lineup for Sunday's game. Braun is replaced by Gerardo Parra, who gets his seventh start of the year in right.

Braun and Parra have each started three of the last six games in right field.

Parra will bat second in the lineup.

Third baseman Aramis Ramirez is also out of the lineup. He's replaced in the lineup by Elian Herrera, who will bat sixth.

Brewers' Elian Herrera, Hector Gomez will split time at second

by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
(5/19/2015) The Brewers will have Elian Herrera and Hector Gomez split playing time at second base for the forseeable future.

"I’m going to take it on a nightly basis," manager Craig Counsell said, per the Journal Sentinel. "There’s no pre-set guy that’s going to get the bulk of the playing time. We’ll go with it every night and see what happens."

"I think Hector is a tremendous defender. That’s the biggest plus that he brings," Counsell said. "Elian is a switch-hitter, which is nice to have. They’ve both shown extra-base hit potential."

CF Carlos Gomez back at top of lineup for Brewers

by Elliott Smith | Staff Writer
(5/18/2015) One day after a scary incident in which he was hit in the head with a fastball, Carlos Gomez is back in his familiar spot atop the Brewers lineup Monday as they prepare to face the Tigers at Comerica Park.

Gomez did not suffer a concussion, just a facial contusion, and so he will be back in center field for the Brewers. With the DH in play, Aramis Ramirez will give up his customary third base position to Elian Herrera

Milwaukee designated second baseman Scooter Gennett for assignment Monday, giving the second base job to the time being to Hector Gomez, who will hit eighth.

Brewers' Elian Herrera taking pressure off himself

by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(5/13/2015) Brewers infielder Elian Herrera has been on a tear of late. He has pulled his average out of the cellar, going from .186 to .228 in the last five games, something he gives credit to his wife for, according to MLB.com.

"The bigger thing is that I was just not trying to do too much, like I was last year," Herrera said. "Try to get a base hit every time if I want to play the next day; I think it was too much pressure for me. I think it was too much. I was on a new team last year, and I was trying to impress, like, 'I can do this.' I think it was too much.

"I went to winter ball, I was trying to play a little more relaxed and having my wife talk to me and say, 'Hey, your swing is different than before.' … She knows a lot about baseball, she helped me a lot. 'Your swing is different. You're swinging too hard right now, just be relaxed. And just play the game.'"

Herrera has four home runs and 10 RBI in 57 at-bats this season.

"I guess everybody starts feeling more comfortable at home plate when you can see more pitches," Herrera said. "Every at-bat you have, you can get more ready, and I think that's helped a lot, and that's [meant] a lot to me."

Brewers scratch Jean Segura with pinky finger soreness

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(5/13/2015) Brewers leadoff hitter and infielder Jean Segura was scratched with soreness in his right pinky finger on Wednesday against the White, per the team's official website. With Segura sidelined, manager Craig Counsell moved Elian Herrera to the leadoff spot. Scooter Gennett was also included in the lineup at the No. 8 spot.

Segura is hitting .262 (33 for 126) with two homers and 12 RBI this season.

Milwaukee is favored (-125) at home against Chicago, per VegasInsider.com.

Brewers 3B Aramis Ramirez (back) still can't start on Wednesday

by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(5/13/2015) Brewers third baseman Aramis Ramirez remains out of the starting lineup Wednesday against the White Sox. Ramirez has been bothered by a sore back and will miss his fifth consecutive start. With team off on Thursday, it's possible Ramirez could give it a go on Friday when the team opens up a three-game series with the Mets in New York.

Elian Herrera, who has homered in three straight games, will get the start at the hot corner once again on Wednesday.

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com

Brewers' Elian Herrera cracks go-ahead home run in win Monday

by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(5/11/2015) Brewers third baseman Elian Herrera went 2 for 4 at the plate in Milwaukee's 10-7 win over the White Sox on Monday. Herrera came up with the go-ahead home run in the eighth inning after Chicago tied it at 7 in the top half of the inning.

"Every time you see a game like that, and the other team just tied the game, it's tough for us," Herrera said to the Associated Press. ''We've got to keep it going."

Herrera ripped a 1-0 pitch from Zach Duke over the left field wall for a two-run shot, his third of the season. Herrera boosted his average to .222 with nine RBI in 53 at-bats this season.

"I think the good thing for Elian right now -- for any of these bench guys -- is he's getting consistent at-bats," manager Craig Counsell said to MLB.com. "We're on Day 3 or 4 of at-bats and you can just see him getting more comfortable. The home runs are a bonus, no question about it. The other thing is he played a real nice third base tonight."

Brewers' Aramis Ramirez (back) remains out, encouraged by MRI

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(5/11/2015) Brewers third baseman Aramis Ramirez is not in the starting lineup Monday for the fourth straight game, but he is encouraged by the results of an MRI on his lower back, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

"I've never had any kind of problems with my lower back before, but everything worked out well [with the MRI]," Ramirez said to MLB.com. "You need it for everything -- fielding, running, hitting. The other day, I could hardly move. Today, I was able to do more stuff, and I'm going to do more exercises now."

Ramirez is dealing with back tightness but thinks he can avoid a stint on the disabled list. Elian Herrera will start at the hot corner once again Monday.

The Brewers are favorites (-110) at home against the White Sox.

Brewers' Carlos Gomez returns, Aramis Ramirez still out Sunday

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Gomez missed three straight games with a strained hip, but he returns to the leadoff spot for Sunday's matchup with the Cubs. Ramirez is missing his third straight start due to tightness in his back. Elian Herrera will make his third straight start at third base in place of Ramirez.

The Brewers are underdogs (+100) at home Sunday.

by Ted Leshinski | Staff Writer

Gomez has been dealing with a strained right hip and Ramirez has been experiening tightness in his back.

Both players are day to day.

"These are day-to-day injuries that happen to guys, and you want them out there for the next 120-130 games, and not missing big chunks," manager Craig Counsell said to MLB.com "You miss big chunks, those are the injuries that hurt you."

Gerardo Parra will start again in center for Gomez and back sixth on Saturday while Elian Herrera gets the nod at third and will bat eighth.

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(4/21/2015) Brewers infielder Eilan Herrera went deep for a grand slam in his first game of the season on Tuesday against the Reds. Herrera was one of three players to hit a grand slam on the night, two of them came from Cincinnati players. It marked the fourth time in Major League Baseball history that three grand slams were hit in one game.

Herrera roped a grand slam down the right-field line off Burke Badenhop to cut the Milwaukee's deficit to three runs in the sixth inning. It was his second career home run, and his first since July 5, 2012. He also doubled in a run in the third and finished 2 for 5 with three runs scored, a home run and a career-best five RBI. Brewers place 2B Scooter Gennett on DL, make minor moves

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com

His problem has festered since cutting his hand in the shower. The original diagnosis was that he was to likely miss two games. He's expected to return after his 15 days are up, per the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Once he returns, he will attempt to improve a .207/.303/.207 slash line. Gennett has six singles all year.

The move motivated the Brewers to promote infielder/outfielder Elian Herrera from Triple-A and designate for assignment right-hander Brandon Kintzler.

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(3/25/2015) Brewers infielder Eilan Herrera has racked up nine hits, one home run and six RBI in 27 at-bats this spring, but his performance might not be enough to earn him a spot on the team's initial 25-man roster, the Journal Sentinel reports.

"It’s a battle," Herrera said. "I know everybody has to fight for a spot here and that’s why I don’t try to think too much. I just try to enjoy the game and do the best I can. I try to control what I can and in the end just pray and then we’ll see. I cannot worry about what might happen and then go and try to do more than I can. Just try to work hard every day and get better and better and we’ll see at the end of the spring."

Herrera, who does not have a spot on the 40-man roster, is battling Luis Jimenez and Hector Gomez for a utility role.
