Braves' Phil Gosselin goes under the knife, sidelined eight weeks

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(5/20/2015) Braves infielder Phil Gosselin underwent surgery to repair a fractured thumb on Wednesday, manager Fredi Gonzalez said, per the team's radio network.

Gosselin was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Monday with the issue. Gonzalez added that he'll need about eight weeks of recovery before he is activated from the DL.

Braves infielder Pedro Ciriaco draws start at third base on Tuesday

by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(5/19/2015) Braves infielder Pedro Ciriaco is in the starting lineup for the second time this season, as he will be the starting third baseman on Tuesday against the Rays. Ciriaco started Sunday's game at shortstop, but will slide over to the hot corner with Phil Gosselin lost for at least two months with a thumb injury.

The light-hitting Ciriaco is batting second in the order on Tuesday. He does have three hits in seven at-bats this season, with all of them going for extra bases (two doubles and a triple).

Braves place Phil Gosselin (thumb) on 15-day DL

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(5/18/2015) The Braves have placed infielder Phil Gosselin on the 15-day disabled list due to a fractured thumb, the team announced Monday.

Gosselin is expected to undergo surgery on the injured thumb on Wednesday. He's expected to be sidelined for about eight weeks while recovering, which should put him out through the All-Star break.

Gosselin has hit .325/.357/.425 with two stolen bases in 40 at-bats.

The Braves will select the contract of infielder Adonis Garcia to replace Gosselin on the active roster. He has hit .351/.380/.455 with one home run, 21 RBI and two stolen bases in 134 at-bats with Triple-A Gwinett while playing third base and left field.

Report: Braves 2B Phil Gosselin destined for DL

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(5/18/2015) A thumb injury will force Braves second baseman Phil Gosselin onto the disabled list, according to MLB.com.

Gosselin sprained the thumb Sunday against Miami, though the specifics of the injury are expected to be revealed later Monday.

It could not have come at a more inopportune time. Gosselin was receiving significant playing time and was on a five-game hitting streak in which he smacked seven hits in 15 at-bats to raise his average on the year to .325.

Braves' Phil Gosselin day to day with thumb sprain

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(5/17/2015) Braves third baseman Phil Gosselin is day to day after suffering a sprained thumb Sunday against the Marlins, MLB.com reports.

Gosselin suffered the injury while making a diving play in the third inning, which he completed before being replaced in the fourth.

"I think I'll be all right," Gosselin said while wearing a brace on his left hand. "As soon as I see the doctor, I'll know. But I'm pretty positive about it until I hear otherwise."

He was 1 for 2 before exiting and has now hit .325/.357/.425 with two stolen bases in 40 at-bats.

Braves 2B Jace Peterson gets breather on Friday vs. Nationals

by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(5/8/2015) Braves second baseman Jace Peterson will be getting his first day off in nearly two weeks, as he is out of the starting lineup Friday against the Nationals. Peterson has been hitting well lately, batting .417 with five RBI over his last 11 games, though he has no extra base hits in that span.

Phil Gosselin will get the start at second, batting seventh. This is just Gosselin's fourth start of the year.

Braves to continue platoon approach at third base

by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com
(5/1/2015) Though Chris Johnson is out for three-to-six weeks following a hand injury, the Braves aren't planning to change up their strategy at third base, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution

For the season, manager Fredi Gonzalez has been rotating Johnson and Alberto Callaspo based on matchups on a game-to-game basis. With Johnson out, Gonzalez said he's not going to make Callaspo the lone third baseman.

The Braves figure to use Phil Gosselin in the third base mix, as well as some potential minor-league additions, Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez is high on Gosselin's potential as a major-leaguer.

“I think he’s a major league player,” Gonzalez said. “He can play multiple positions, he can pinch hit. He’s a very valuable piece in the National League team. He can play third, second, short. You can even run him in the outfield like we did in spring training.”

Braves to use Jace Peterson as primary second baseman

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(4/26/2015) Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez indicated Sunday that he's returning to his initial plan to use infielder Jace Peterson as his primary second baseman, MLB.com reports.

Peterson has shared time at second base with Alberto Callaspo, who has also made eight starts at third base, and Phil Gosselin, leading to Peterson seeing just 11 of a possible 17 starts at the position. He's seen action all over the starting lineup, batting first or second in four of the team's first five games but spending most of his time batting seventh or eighth as of late.

Peterson has hit just .171/.239/.220 in 41 at-bats. He's starting at second base and batting sixth in Sunday's matchup with the Phillies, in which the Braves are underdogs (+100).

Braves' Gonzalez: Phil Gosselin is not going to sleep well after miscue

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(4/22/2015) Braves infielder Phil Gosselin got the start at second base on Tuesday, but botched a routine double play grounder that proved costly against the Mets. Gosselin, making his third start of the season, saw three runs scored during a four-run fifth inning after his miscue.

"Goose is going to go back and not sleep real well because he makes that play every single time," manager Fredi Gonzalez said after Tuesday's 7-1 defeat to New York. "It's just one of those things where maybe he hadn't been out there in a while and got a little jumpy."

Gosselin has just two hits in his first 13 at-bats, and has not plated a run since his first appearance of the season on April 10.

Braves' Philip Gosselin gets start at short over Jace Peterson

by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
(4/21/2015) Braves infielder Philip Gosselin will start at shortstop in Tuesday's game at the Mets, in place of regular starter Jace Peterson. He'll hit eighth in the lineup.

It's just Gosselin's second start at short this season. He's also started one game at third.

Gosselin is hitting .100 this season, with a stolen base and two RBI.

The Braves are +135 underdogs at the Mets.

Braves hitting better, but don't credit top of the lineup

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(4/17/2015) The Braves have launched the 2015 season better offensively than they did last year. But don't credit the top of the lineup.

The team has yet to score two or fewer runs in a game. They did so four times and were blanked twice in their first seven games of 2014. Yet the first two hitters in the lineup are struggling mightily.

Braves leadoff hitters are 8-for-37 (.216) with a .275 on-base percentage. But they've been raking compared to those hitting behind them. The second spot, which has been manned by Jace Peterson, Alberto Callaspo, Phil Gosselin and Andrelton Simmons, has produced a .114 average with no extra-base hits, .162 OBP and .114 slugging percentage.

Braves' Gosselin starts at 2B on Friday as Peterson gets a night off

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(4/10/2015) Braves infielder Phil Gosselin drew his first start of the season at second base Friday against the Mets. He replaced Jace Peterson, who started the first three games at second base for Atlanta.

Peterson, who won the starting second base job during spring training, is batting .200 (2 for 10) through three games. He has no extra-bat hits and no RBI. He does have two runs, two walks and two strikeouts.

Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez: 2B gig is 'wide open'

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(2/26/2015) Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez confirmed to reporters following Thursday's full-squad workout that the second baseman position is a "wide open" competition, and that Jose Peraza, Alberto Callaspo, Phil Gosselin and Jace Peterson are all entering camp with a chance to make the club, per MLB.com.

"It's wide open," Gonzalez said. "It's all depending on how we want to work second base, the infield and even the bench."

Phil Gosselin in, Tommy La Stella out of Saturday lineup

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(8/16/2014) Slumping Braves second baseman Tommy La Stella seems to be losing at-bats at least temporarily to newcomer Phil Gosselin - even against right-handers - and Saturday is an example. The latter is playing over the former against Oakland.

This marks the third start in four games for Gosselin, who slugged two hits, including a home run, Friday night. La Stella has just one hit in his last 15 at-bats.

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(7/14/2014) One day after recalling infielder Phil Gosselin from Triple-A Gwinnett, the Braves optioned him back to Gwinnett Monday, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

Gosselin was brought up by the team while second baseman Dan Uggla served a one-game suspension, but he didn't appear in Sunday's game. Gosselin returns to a .345/.381/.494 line at Gwinnett with five home runs, 30 RBI and six stolen bases in 348 at-bats.
