Angels claim Ryan Wheeler, DFA David Carpenter

(8/2/2014) The Angels claimed infielder Ryan Wheeler off waivers from the Rockies Saturday, the team announced.

Wheeler was hitting .232/.281/.375 in 56 at-bats for the Rockies before he was waived. Pitcher David Carpenter was designated for assignment to make room on the roster for Wheeler.

(9/22/2013) The Angels outrighted pitcher David Carpenter to Double-A Arkansas Sunday, the Los Angeles Times reports. The move removes Carpenter from the team's 40-man roster.

Carpenter has made 53 appearances between Arkansas and Triple-A Salt Lake, going 5-3 with a 6.53 ERA, 1.60 WHIP and 52:35 K:BB ratio in 60 2/3 innings.

(4/25/2013) The Angels announced after Wednesday night's game against the Rangers that relief pitcher David Carpenter has been optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake, according to MLB.com.

Carpenter made his first appearance of the season for the Angels Wednesday, allowing four earned runs on two hits and two walks while recording only one out, which came via strikeout. The ugly debut gave Carpenter a 108.00 ERA.

Carpenter's stay should be a short one. He posted a 4.76 ERA over 28 games with the Angels last season.

David Carpenter, Mitch Stetter fighting for Angels' bullpen

(3/26/2013) David Carpenter and Mitch Stetter are fighting for the final spot in the Angels' bullpen.

The team could also send Garrett Richards to Triple-A to act as an emergency starter, but he has a 1.88 ERA in 14 1/3 innings this spring.

Carpenter has been bothered by a back injury during the spring, which pushed his debut back to March 17.

Stetter was a non-roster invite to camp, and has been strong against lefties over his career. 


Braves begin to finalize roster

(3/26/2013) The Atlanta Braves announced Tuesday that Jordan Schafer has made the opening day roster, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

Atlanta optioned infielder Tyler Pastornicky, outfielder Jose Constanza and reliever David Carpenter to Triple-A Gwinnett.

Braves skipper Freddi Gonzalez said Pastornicky, who hit .375 this spring with two homers and 14 RBI over 56 at-bats, remains a valuable piece for the team. He will play second, shortstop and some outfield in the minors. He'll play mostly second after Paul Janish returns. 

The 26-year-old Schafer hit .241 this spring with four stolen bases. The speedster will be a backup outfielder.
