Brewers sit Maldonado in favor of Centeno for Thursday's game

by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com
(5/21/2015) The Brewers held catcher Juan Centeno out of Thursday's game at Atlanta and will start Martin Maldonado instead, the team announced.

"He's caught a lot more than he's used to but I don't think he's wearing down," manager Craig Counsell said, per the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "He's had some bad luck, almost on a nightly basis but he hasn't swung the bat the way he's capable of."

Maldonado was also held out of Sunday's game in order to rest. He is hitting .149 in 94 at-bats this season, while Centeno is batting .077 in 13 at-bats. Centeno will bat seventh and face Julio Teheran, who he has never faced.

The Brewers are the underdogs (+120) at Atlanta on Thursday

Brewers send C Lucroy to DL, promote Centeno

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(4/21/2015) What was anticipated has become reality - the Brewers have placed catcher Jonathan Lucroy on the disabled list with a toe injury.

Lucroy sustained the injury by fouling a pitch off his foot Monday night.

He has been one of many Brewers struggling at the plate. Lucroy owns a slash line of .156/.235/.200 with no homers and two RBI.

His placement on the DL has forced the team to promote catcher Juan Centeno from the minors. The 25 year old earned 40 major league at-bats with the Mets in 2013 and 2014.

Brewers C Jonathan Lucroy leaves game with toe injury

by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com
(4/20/2015) Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy was forced to leave Monday's game against the Reds after taking a foul tip off his left foot, the team announced.

Lucroy was replaced by Martin Maldonado at catcher. Lucroy was 0 for 3 in the game before suffering the injury.

"I can't do anything about it. I have to wait for it to heal up," Lucroy said, per MLB.com. "Freak thing. You guys saw it. I don't know what else to say about it other than I have to overcome it, deal with it."

After the game, the Brewers announced Lucroy will be placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with a broken left toe and the team will call up catcher Juan Centeno

"I've been hit a million times on my feet," Lucroy said. "I was just talking to 'Maldy' about it and he said the same thing: That's the first time I've ever seen a catcher break their toe. It had to be me. It's about par for the course right now."

Juan Centeno making good impression on Brewers

by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
(3/27/2015) Catcher Juan Centeno signed with the Brewers after getting waived by the Mets in the offseason. There were some growing pains at first, but he's finally made a good impression with his new team.

"He’s improving all the time from what we’ve seen," said manager Ron Roenicke, per Tom Haudricourt of the Journal Sentinel. "When he first came here, he maybe wasn’t comfortable. It’s hard when you change teams, and he’s trying to impress. He’s a nice player; will be a nice backup for us."

Centeno is hitting .400 for the Brewers this spring.

Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy (hamstring) to miss 4-6 weeks

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(2/11/2015) The Brewers announced Wednesday that All-Star catcher Jonathan Lucroy is expected to miss 4-6 weeks due to a mild strain of his right hamstring.

Brewers assistant general manager Gord Ash said Lucroy's agent called with the news of the injury, per the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The injury is at the top of the leg, where it attaches to the hip. Ash added Lucroy mentioned some soreness in that area at end of 2014 season, but the team had no concerns about the injury at the time. Lucroy told MLB.com the injury flared up when he ramped up his running two weeks ago. Lucroy received a PRP injection Tuesday to help with the healing.

Lucroy was examined Monday by Brewers head physician William Raasch, who initially diagnosed the injury. It was then confirmed Tuesday during a second opinion with Marlins medical director Dr. Lee Kaplan, per MLB.com.

Ash said Lucroy can do some hitting, fielding and throwing while he recovers from the injury. He just can't run or perform any activities that might put serious strain on his hamstring.

Ash said the Brewers are "very hopeful" Lucroy will be ready by opening day. Martin Maldonado is Lucroy's backup and catcher Juan Centeno is also on the 40-man roster. Brewers pitchers and catchers are expected to report for spring training Feb. 20.

This is an unfortunate setback for Lucroy, who is coming off his first All-Star season. He also finished fourth in the NL MVP voting and totaled a league-leading 53 doubles in 2014.

Lucroy has been a very good offensive catcher since 2013. Over the last two seasons, he is batting .291 with a .357 on-base percentage, .460 slugging percentage and .817 OPS.
