Zoilo Almonte not a big deal

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(6/25/2013) The way some people are going on about Zoilo Almonte -- dubbing him "Puig East" because he got a few hits in his first couple games in the majors -- you'd think he was some big-name prospect destined to be the next face of the franchise.

But he's not. He's just some guy the Yankees called up because they needed outfield help.

Don't get me wrong: He was hitting fine at Triple-A, making solid contact and walking at a decent rate. But if a .789 OPS is the most he can muster against minor-leaguers at age 24, a bench role is likely in his future.

That's not just me saying it. Baseball America didn't even list Amonte in this year's Prospect Handbook, and they go 30 deep in each organization. Most organizations don't have 30 prospects worth mentioning.

It's not inconeivable to think that if not for this case of him being in the right place at the right time, Almonte might never have reached the majors. Granted, if he's hot, he's hot and deserves some amount of attention in Fantasy because of it, but don't expect much in the long run.

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

"I’ve been pretty much seeing the ball well since I’ve been up here, so it’s the same feeling that I had the past couple of days today," Almonte said, per the New York Post.

Yankees 'believe' in Zoilo Almonte

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(6/19/2013) Yankees manager Joe Girardi said prior to Wednesday's doubleheader against the Dodgers the plan is to give rookie outfielder Zoilo Almonte, who was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Tuesday, a start Wednesday against Los Angeles and one against a right-handed starter in the weekend series against the Rays.

Girardi is impressed with Almonte, who was batting .354 in 16 June games prior to his promotion.

"We really believe this kid is going to hit," Girardi said, per The Journal News. "At times, we really saw it in spring training. He struggled a little bit in spring training. Maybe it was the excitement of trying to make a team. But he has seemed to swing the bat pretty well down there, especially left-handed. He’s a guy that can play either left or right, which is helpful in this situation."

New York is expected to search internally for possible candidates, including Matt Diaz and Juan Rivera. But what about blossoming outfield prospect Zoilo Almonte, who blasted a home run in his first spring game Saturday? "There’s going to be guys here who are going to get to play a lot," manager Joe Girardi said. "We’ll have to try to figure out what we’re going to do. Is it a situation where it’s a guy who plays every day? Is it a platoon situation? There’s some things we’re going to have to look at."
