Indians promote OF Jerry Sands, send pair to Triple-A

(7/31/2015) The Indians have promoted outfielder Jerry Sands from Triple-A Columbus as part of several moves made Friday.

They have also sent newly acquired outfielder Abraham Almonte to the same team and activated starting pitcher Josh Tomlin off the disabled list. He too has landed in Columbus.

Sands batted .375 in 24 at-bats with Cleveland early in the year. He continued to produce with the Clippers with a .287/.409/.538 slash line and a current seven-game hitting streak.


Indians send RP Rzepczynski to Padres for OF Abraham Almonte

(7/31/2015) The Indians have traded left-handed reliever Marc Rzepczynski to the Padres for center fielder Abraham Almonte, per ESPN.

Rzepczynski has struggled this year after two strong seasons in Cleveland. His 4.43 ERA, if maintained, would be his worst since 2010.

The 26-year-old Almonte is hitting just .204 for San Diego this year and is batting .233 in 330 big-league at-bats.

(7/22/2015) Padres outfielder Abraham Almonte , who was recalled from Triple-A Wednesday, will be thrown right into the fire, playing left field and hitting leadoff for San Diego in its series finale against the Giants. 

Almonte, who hasn't played for the Padres since his demotion in early June, was not productive during his first stint with the team this year, compiling a .186/.255/.233 slash line in 43 at-bats. 

This will be the fourth time this season Almonte has led off for San Diego, and he has two hits in his previous 11 at-bats from the top of the order.

(7/22/2015) The Padres recalled outfielder Abraham Almonte from Triple-A El Paso on Wednesday. Almonte hasn't appeared in a game for the Padres since early June, and he has eight hits in 43 at-bats this season.

He'll take the roster spot of Will Middlebrooks, who was demoted to Triple-A on Wednesday.

(6/8/2015) The Padres have reinstated outfielder Melvin Upton from the 15-day disabled list. He went down on April 4 with a left foot injury before a trade from Atlanta.

The team has also optioned fellow outfielder Abraham Almonte to Triple-A El Paso. He managed a .186/.255/.233 slash line in 43 at-bats with San Diego.

(5/29/2015) Padres outfielder Will Venable is out of the lineup for Friday's matchup with the Pirates. Venable had started each of the last eight games for the Padres, going 11 for 32 with a double and three RBI in that stretch.

But, with the Pirates throwing a left-hander on Friday, Venable will take a seat. He is just 2 for 9 against southpaws this season.

Switch-hitter Abraham Almonte will get the start in center field and bat seventh on Friday against starter Francisco Liriano. 


Padres' Jedd Gyorko back in the lineup on Tuesday

(5/26/2015) Padres infielder Jedd Gyorko is back in the starting lineup on Tuesday against the Angels, the team announced. 

Gyorko will take over the DH role and bat eighth, with Matt Kemp moving back to right field and Abraham Almonte going to the bench. Gyorko is hitting .202 with nine RBI in 99 at-bats this season. The Padres are currently the underdogs (+160) against Los Angeles.

(5/15/2015) Padres center fielder Wil Myers was held out of the starting lineup for the fourth straight game on Friday. 

Myers has been battling tendinitis in his left wrist. He's replaced in the lineup by Abraham Almonte, who starts his second gmae of the season in center. Almonte will bat second. 

Myers is replaced in the leadoff spot by second baseman Cory Spangenberg, who is at the top of the order for the fourth time this season.

(5/8/2015) The Padres placed first baseman Yonder Alonso on the 15-day disabled list, reports MLB.com

Alonso suffered a shoulder injury during Thursday's loss to the Diamondbacks and an MRI revealed he sustained a deep bone bruise. Alonso was batting .333 with 10 RBI in 87 at-bats this season.

The team will call up outfielder Abraham Almonte to replace Alonso. Almonte hit .230 in 204 at-bats last season.

(7/31/2014) The Padres acquired outfielder Abraham Almonte and pitcher Stephen Kohlscheen from the Mariners in exchange for outfielder Chris Denorfia, according to MLB.com.

Almonte, who began the season as the Mariners' starting center fielder, is batting .267 with six home runs, 10 doubles, 31 RBI and seven stolen bases in 72 games since his early May demotion to Triple-A Tacoma.

Kohlscheen is 3-1 with a 2.70 ERA and 1.11 WHIP in 38 relief appearances between Double-A Jackson and Tacoma. He also has six saves and has 55 strikeouts in 56 2/3 innings.

(4/2/2014) Outfielder Abraham Almonte has started both games in center field for the Mariners to open their series against the Angels. Through two games, Almonte is batting .300 (3 for 10) with one run, two doubles, two RBI, three strikeouts and one caught stealing.

Almonte hit just .178 in 23 spring games, but he nearly drew as many walks (eight) as he had strikeouts (10). Almonte also had two home runs, three doubles, four RBI, three stolen bases and 11 runs this spring.
