He now has one home run each in April, May, June and July. Overbay has hit .235/.316/.349 with four home runs and 25 RBI in 166 at-bats.

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(3/29/2014) The Brewers have selected the contracts of both Mark Reynolds and Lyle Overbay.

Platoon destined to mean boatload of strikeouts for Brewers

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(3/27/2014) The Brewers appear set to platoon Lyle Overbay against right-handers and Mark Reynolds against lefties at first base this season.

Both have enjoyed strong springs, but playing that duo could result in 200 strikeouts from that position in 2014. Overbay fanned 111 times in 445 at-bats a year ago with the Yankees, which makes him a contact hitter in comparison to Reynolds, who struck out 144 times in the same number of at-bats.

Lyle Overbay speaks frankly about Ryan Braun

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(2/21/2014) Brewers first baseman Lyle Overbay spoke frankly about teammate Ryan Braun Thursday, according to the New York Daily News.

"He’s going to go through some tough times," Overbay said. "Honestly, it’s going to be deserved," he added. Overbay wasn't angry when talking about Braun, but gave his honest opinion. He said he wasn't going to judge Braun for his mistakes, but knows other players around the league are going to "hate" Braun for what he did.

Overbay is one of many players who believe the punishment for taking illegal supplements needs to be increased.

Defense going to be key in Brewers' 1B competiton

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(2/9/2014) Brewers manager Ron Roenicke hinted Mark Reynolds and Lyle Overbay could have "an edge" over Juan Francisco and Hunter Morris at first base because of their defensive skills in the field, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

"Obviously, everybody isn't going to make our team among the first basemen," Roenicke said. "With Overbay and Reynolds, we know from their history what we're getting from them. We know that Juan Francisco has power and is going to hit a lot of home runs if he's the guy. The other guys, they are younger. Hunter Morris struggled a little bit in Triple-A last year but figured it out in the second half, which I really liked. So, we'll see.

"If one of the younger guys steps up, then things change. But going into spring training we do feel we have a veteran presence there. Defense also matters to me a lot there. If we think we're better off defensively with the two veterans, that gives them an edge."

“My plan is to put Overbay at first base," Girardi said, per the New York Post. "We are going to see some lefties against the Dodgers when we get home, but my plan is to put him at first base."

Lyle Overbay still learning in outfield

by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com
(6/12/2013) Yankees first baseman-turned-outfielder Lyle Overbay misplayed a popup in shallow right field Tuesday that cost his team, the first example of the risk New York took in moving him to right when Andy Pettitte came off the DL June 3, the Newark Star-Ledger reports Wednesday.

It was a play that most right fielders would make routinely and Overbay simply didn't have the experience to make it.

"Guys who have played in the outfield enough, they can kind of react," Overbay said over the weekend in Seattle. "Just like me at first [base]."

The Yankees kept Overbay around because of his bat and will allow him to work through his early struggles in the outfield. That said, he's hitting .246 with eight homers and 29 RBI. Over his last 10 games, Overbay has gone 6 for 30 (.200) with just one RBI.
