Lyle Overbay not fretting about future

by Bill Passonno | CBSSports.com
(5/7/2013) Yankees first baseman Lyle Overbay understands he is probably on borrowed time with the team. With regular first baseman Mark Teixeira (wrist) planning a return by the end of May, Overbay will likely be squeezed from playing time and could even be pinched from the roster.

However, that uncertainty hasn't affected his production recently as he's hit safely in seven of his past eight games, recording three homers and seven RBI in that span. He had just two home runs total in 116 at-bats between Arizona and Atlanta last year.

"I think about it a little bit," Overbay told the New York Post. "I know the situation. I'm just enjoying my time while I'm here and when he comes back, hopefully we can coexist. It'll work itself out."

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(3/27/2013) The Yankees are giving Lyle Overbay a three-day audition before he can opt out of his minor-league deal Friday, and he made the most of it Wednesday against the Orioles, collecting two singles in five at bats while playing first base the entire game.

"Try to watch his swings and make the best judgment you can in three or four days," manager Joe Girardi told the Journal News before the game. "That’s what you have to do, and see from an ability standpoint if he can help you offensively as well. … He does have a good glove, and he’s had a good glove over the years. He can save some stuff for you, there’s no doubt about it."

Red Sox decision on Lyle Overbay coming Tuesday

by Jack Moore | CBSSports.com
(3/22/2013) The Red Sox must decide by Tuesday if Lyle Overbay will break camp with the major league squad. Overbay has an opt-out clause he can exercise Tuesday and is "on the bubble" for a roster spot now, according to Ian Browne of MLB.com.

Overbay is hitting a tepid .242/.350/.394 in spring with three extra-base hits but zero home runs. He is competing against outfielder Daniel Nava and first baseman Mike Carp for a final spot.

Likely, the decision will depend on how much the Red Sox feel they need another outfielder on the bench; "Ultimately how that group on our bench complements one another is where things will settle," manager John Farrell said.
