Five Marlins become free agents

(11/6/2013) Marlins outfielder Juan Pierre, third baseman Placido Polanco, outfielder Matt Diaz, outfielder Austin Kearns and relief pitcher Chad Qualls have filed for free agency.

All were just role players in 2013. Qualls figures to attract the most interest after posting a 2.61 ERA in 66 appearances.


Austin Kearns not expected back this season

(7/12/2013) Marlins president of baseball operations Larry Beinfest does not seem confident the team will have Austin Kearns back this season, as he continues to deal with a family issue while on the restricted list.

"Don't know," Beinfest told the Sun Sentinel. "He's a got a very difficult family situation. It's terrible and we feel for him. It's getting late already. He's missed a lot of time. It would take him a while to ramp up now considering he's been out for two months. He'd have to beat the clock to get back this year probably."

Kearns has not played since May 3, when he had a .185 batting average in 27 at-bats.

As expected, Kearns was held out Tuesday against the Nationals. He has missed three-straight games. The 32-year-old veteran has been held without a hit through his first 10 at-bats.

"He's resting well," manager Mike Redmond said after Sunday's game. "I think they're still doing some tests on him. But it looks like everything is fine for now. We'll probably know more tomorrow."

Kearns was filling in for Giancarlo Stanton, who missed his third consecutive outing with a shoulder issue, before being replaced by Justin Ruggiano.

(3/26/2013) The Marlins told outfielder Austin Kearns and first baseman Casey Kotchman they will be added to the 25-man roster, reports the South Florida Sun-Sentinel Tuesday. 

The 30-year-old Kotchman is hitting .425 this spring with a homer and six RBI over 40 at-bats. Kearns, 32, hit .094 this spring over 32 at-bats.
