Matt Guerrier chooses free agency over Triple-A gig

(7/29/2014) What was speculated has now been confirmed - veteran reliever Matt Guerrier has refused a Triple-A assignment by the Twins in favor of free agency after clearing waivers, per the St. Paul Pioneer-Press.

Gurrier was let go after a terrible stretch in July.

(7/29/2014) Veteran reliever Matt Guerrier has cleared waivers and has been outrighted by the Twins to Triple-A Rochester. He is expected to refuse that assignment and become a free agent, sources have told MLBDailyDish.com.

The 35-year-old Guerrier had slumped after a strong run this season. He allowed five runs on 12 hits in his last seven innings before being designated for assignment.

The 35-year-old reliever has been solid for the club this season, posting a 3.86 ERA over 28 innings. He won't factor into the team's future, though, which may have been the reason for the DFA. The club will call up Ryan Pressly to replace Guerrier on the active roster.

(6/9/2014) Twins pitcher Matt Guerrier was charged with the loss Monday night against the Blue Jays.

Guerrier was charged with the game winning run in the ninth inning, surrendered by Casey Fien. Guerrier permitted one run on one hits and two walks while striking out three in 1 1/3 innings of a 5-4 defeat. He owns a 2.84 ERA and a 1.03 WHIP in 12 2/3 innings of relief.

(5/8/2014) The Twins never asked pitcher Matt Guerrier to push back his opt-out date, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

Guerrier was eligible to opt out of his deal Thursday, but the club decided to call him up. After signing with the team in late March, Guerrier began the year in the minors. He allowed four runs in nine innings over two levels. Guerrier said he wasn't sure whether he would have left the club had they asked him to push back his opt-out date.

Guerrier's contract included an opt-out provision if he wasn't in the majors by Thursday, and the team has decided to bring him up rather than lose him to free agency. He surrendered four earned runs in nine innings between Double-A and Triple-A while striking out eight and walking four.

Guerrier was released Monday, but chose to sign a minor-league deal with the team. He'll stay in extended spring training for a while, and is expected to be promoted to Triple-A once he's ready. Guerrier is recovering from tendon surgery last August.

(3/24/2014) The Twins made several roster moves Monday, which included releasing veteran reliever Matt Guerrier. The Twins also optioned pitcher Ryan Pressly, pitcher Michael Tonkin and catcher Chris Herrmann to Triple-A Rochester. 

Lastly, the Twins reassigned six players to minor-league camp. They were Matt HoffmanAaron ThomsponDeolis Guerra, Wilkin RamirezDoug Bernier and Deibinson Romero.

(3/14/2014) Twins pitcher Matt Guerrier made his first Grapefruit League appearance Friday, striking out two in a perfect inning in his team's 2-2 tie with the Orioles.

"He was very good," pitching coach Rick Anderson told the St. Paul Pioneer Press after the debut. "He showed a plus sinker. I was impressed. He felt great. He told me, 'With that injury I got into bad habits. So coming back I took it slow so I could get my delivery back to where it was.' That ball sunk like crazy. It was fun to watch and to see him out there again."

(3/11/2014) Twins pitcher Matt Guerrier made his spring debut Tuesday, according to MLB.com.

Guerrier tossed one inning during an intrasquad game. He allowed one hit, and managed to get three ground ball outs. Guerrier was expected to pitch in an actual game, but the team wanted him to be closely monitored the first time out. 

Manager Ron Gardenhire remains optimistic about Guerrier's chances of making the 25-man roster. "He's actually in great shape and his arm feels fantastic," Gardenhire said. "So now we start the process of him getting innings."

Guerrier is recovering from flexor tendon surgery, and is taking things slowly. He will throw a bullpen session Monday, and is hoping to face hitters Thursday. Guerrier said he's hoping to make his spring training debut in early March. He's circled March 9 and March 11 as possible dates.

Guerrier said he was throwing every other day during the offseason, but knew he would slow things down once he got to camp. He's not taking part in every throwing exercise with the club just yet. (1/29/2014) The Twins announced Wednesday they signed reliever Matt Guerrier to a minor-league deal, which includes an invitiation to spring training. Guerrier is coming off August elbow surgery, which required 6-8 months of rehab.

Guerrier pitched for the Twins from 2004-10, going 19-25 with a 3.38 ERA and 1.24 WHIP in 393 relief appearances.

(8/16/2013) Cubs reliever Matt Guerrier underwent surgery Friday to repair the flexor mass in his right arm, MLB.com reports. He is expected to be sidelined six to eight months.

Guerrier went 2-1 with a 2.13 ERA in 15 games after the Carlos Marmol trade. He finished the season with a 4.01 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP in 42 2/3 innings of relief.

(8/14/2013) Cubs pitcher Matt Guerrier will get a second opinion on his arm, according to MLB.com.

Team doctors diagnosed Guerrier with a tear on his pronator teres muscle of his throwing elbow. Surgery is recommended for the injury. But Guerrier is going to see if he can rehab the issue. If so, his recovery time would be 6-8 weeks. Otherwise, he could be out longer.

Guerrier has a 4.01 ERA in 42 2/3 innings.
