Struggles have Padres prospect Robbie Erlin fading from picture

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(5/20/2015) One would have assumed that southpaw Robbie Erlin would be the first starting pitcher promoted by the Padres this season if anyone in their rotation struggled.

One would have assumed wrong, according to U-T San Diego.

The 24-year-old Erlin has some major league experience, but has struggled at that level. Now he's struggling even worse at Triple-A El Paso. His latest dud was Thursday against Fresno, when he surrendered four home runs in six innings. He finished with eight runs allowed on 13 hits and a disturbing 6.21 ERA.

Padres starter Odrisamer Despaigne has faltered recently, leading to speculation that the team might give a start or two to a minor leaguer before Brandon Morrow returns from the disabled list. But it appears that Erlin will not enter into that discussion. He has yielded 18 runs on 20 hits in 20 innings pitched over his last four starts.

Padres prospect Robbie Erlin coming on strong at Triple-A

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(4/27/2015) After a slow start, Padres pitching prospect Robbie Erlin is coming around at Triple-A El Paso.

The 24-year-old Erlin (3-1) owns a 4.50 ERA that has been shrinking. He managed his second straight strong start Sunday in a defeat of Salt Lake, yielding one run on seven hits and striking out three in six innings.

Erlin has allowed just two earned runs in 12 innings over his last two starts, but has surrendered 28 hits in 22 innings on the year.

(3/22/2015) The Padres optioned pitchers Robbie Erlin and Leonel Campos to Triple-A El Paso and re-assigned shortstop Diego Goris and pitchers Matt Wisler and Jay Jackson to minor-league camp Sunday.

Erlin has started 20 games for the major-league team over the last two seasons. He finishes his spring with two earned runs allowed in six innings. Wisler, who is considered one of the team's top pitching prospects, allowed eight earned runs in five innings over three appearances.

Black: Morrow, Despaigne might have slight edge for No. 5 SP role

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(2/26/2015) While Padres manager Bud Black is not ready to put odds on the competition for the final spot in the team's rotation, he did seem to indicate Brandon Morrow and Odrisamer Despaigne might be a little ahead of Robbie Erlin and Matt Wisler , per U-T San Diego.

"I think we're going to look at them all, but Morrow and Despaigne have a little something to them," Black said. "It doesn't hurt Matt to go back to the minors. Robbie Erlin was in our rotation last year, made some starts and pitched well at times. He's still developing. I don't know if there's a front-runner, but you can maybe say that Morrow and Despaigne are out there just a touch."

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com

Offense carries Robbie Erlin to win

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com

Robbie Erlin could shine as a one-start option

by Al Melchior | Data Analyst
(5/15/2014) As the weekend nears, we Fantasy owners tend to hover around the two-start pitchers list, looking for a way to add innings for the coming week. Sometimes we lose sight of unherladed one-start pitchers who have a great matchup, and the Padres' Robbie Erlin could be such a pitcher in Fantasy Week 8 (May 19-25).

Erlin is scheduled to face the Cubs at home on May 23. Not only do the Cubs rank 24th in the majors in runs scored, but by getting them at PETCO Park, Erlin has an opportunity to put up some stellar stats. He has an 8.4 K/9 ratio at home, as opposed to a 7.0 mark on the road, and by holding opposing hitters to a .187/.263/.303 slash line at home, Erlin has managed to post a tidy 2.92 home ERA this season. While has pitched only 24 2/3 innings there so far in 2014, he allowed an even lower OPS and ERA over 33 home innings last season.

If you're thinking about using a two-start Yovani Gallardo, A.J. Burnett or Jake Odorizzi, consider going with Erlin instead, as he could outperform those three and several other two-start pitchers with his lone scheduled appearance.

Robbie Erlin dominates Miami for win No. 2

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(5/11/2014) Padres starter Robbie Erlin remained dominant at home on Sunday against Miami, scattering only five hits in 6 1/3 scoreless innings for his second win of the season.

Erlin (2-4) struck out seven and did not issue a walk, improving his ERA from 4.95 to 4.22 on the year. 75 of his 107 pitches were strikes. Over his last two home starts covering 13 1/3 innings, Erlin has yielded only one earned run.

Following a 5-4 victory, Erlin will look to maintain his recent success Saturday at Colorado. He is 1-2 with a 6.00 ERA in three starts away from home.
