(3/12/2007) Nationals starter Chris Michalak allowed two runs and four hits with two walks in 2 1/3 innings. "As far as the outing went, I was pleased with it," Michalak said. "I accomplished what I wanted to, and that was to throw more strikes."

Nats sign 17 to minor deals


(11/7/2006) In addition to four major-league contracts, the Nationals agreed to 17 minor-league deals Monday: Right-handers Jermaine Van Buren, T.J. Nall, Colby Lewis, Felix Diaz, Eduardo Valdez, Josh Hall, Winston Abreu and Jim Magrane; left-handers Mike Bacsik, Billy White and Chris Michalak; catchers Juan Brito and Danny Ardoin; infielders Joe Thurston and Alejandro Machado; and outfielders Darnell McDonald and Wayne Lydon. Thirteen of the 21 free agents are pitchers. "We head the list of teams that need pitching," team president Stan Kasten said last week. Bacsik was 11-0 with a 2.79 ERA in 28 games at Triple-A Tucson. He was with the Nationals at spring training in 2005.

(9/22/2006) Reds SP Chris Michalak yielded two runs Friday in a rain-shortended win over the Cubs. He went 4 1/3 innings, striking out two and walking two.

Michalak to start Friday


(9/19/2006) The Reds said LHP Chris Michalak will start Friday in place of Eric Milton, who says his sore left elbow has ended his season. Milton left the game against San Diego on Sept. 12 with the elbow getting stiff on him. He had a cortisone shot the next day and tried to pitch Sunday but lasted only seven batters and realized he shouldn't have pitched. Jason Johnson will likely be the Reds' No. 5 starter when that turn comes up next week.

(9/18/2006) Reds LHP Eric Milton probably will miss the rest of the season with shoulder soreness. He left his last start early and had a cortisone shot. Chris Michalak will likely take Milton's next turn in the rotation, while Jason Johnson is also an option.

(9/15/2006) LHP Chris Michalak grew up a Cubs fan in Joliet, Ill., about 45 miles from Chicago. On Saturday, he'll try to shut them down. "I watched games in (Wrigley Field) a couple of times," Michalak said. "I watched my cousin (Mark Grant) pitch here. This will be the first time I step foot in here as a player." Michalak is 1-2 with a 5.09 ERA in five appearances and three starts.
