Eric Surkamp strikes out two in win Tuesday

(9/17/2014) White Sox pitcher Eric Surkamp picked up a win Tuesday, striking out two and walking one in a scoreless inning of work in his team's 7-5 victory over the Royals.

Surkamp (2-0) had given up runs in two of his previous three outings before throwing up a zero Tuesday, and the White Sox offense took the lead for good after Surkamp retired the only batter he faced in the sixth inning. He was pulled with two outs in the seventh after the Royals sent a pinch hitter to the plate. Surkamp owns a 5.66 ERA and 19:11 K:BB ratio in 20 2/3 innings.


White Sox add seven to active roster

(9/2/2014) The White Sox purchased the contract of outfielder Michael Taylor from Triple-A Charlotte Tuesday, one of seven roster moves made as part of September roster expansion.

The team also announced the recall of pitchers Chris Bassitt, Scott Carroll and Eric Surkam, outfielder Jordan Danks, catcher Josh Phegley and infielder Marcus Semien

The club will wait until Saturday to make a corresponding move. Surkamp posted a 6.91 ERA over 14 1/3 innings in the majors.

The team also played outfielder Moises Sierra on the DL with a strained left oblique, designated left-handed pitcher Charlie Leesman for assignment, placed right-hander Javy Guerra on the bereavement list and recalled southpaw Eric Surkamp from Triple-A Charlotte.

Surkamp allowed one walk and no runs over just one-third of an inning against Seattle. He owns a 7.11 ERA and a 1.58 WHIP over 12 2/3 innings of relief.

(8/10/2014) White Sox pitcher Eric Surkamp needed three pitches to record two outs and pick up a win in his team's 2-1, 10-inning victory over the Mariners Saturday.

Surkamp (1-0) was brought into the bottom of the ninth with a runner on first and one out, and he promptly induced a ground ball to record an inning-ending double play. The offense then took the lead in the top of the 10th. Surkamp owns a 7.30 ERA and 9:6 K:BB ratio in 12 1/3 innings.


White Sox will go with a closer by committee for now

(6/28/2014) The White Sox will go with a closer by committee approach for now, according to CSN.

Ronald Belisario had been the club's closer, but was pulled Friday after struggling in the ninth. The club turned to Eric Surkamp, and then Jake Petricka to pick up the save. Manager Robin Ventura claims the team will use matchups to dictate who closes.

(6/26/2014) What was reported is now official: Veteran reliever Scott Downs has been designated for assignment by the White Sox. The team has recalled fellow left-hander Eric Surkamp from Triple-A Charlotte.

The 38-year-old Downs has been ineffective this season. His .6.08 ERA is the highest he has posted in any full season. Downs had never struggled with control before this year. He has 15 walks in 24 2/3 innings.

(3/19/2014) Catcher Josh Phegley headlines a quartet of White Sox dispatched to minor league camp Wednesday. The others are third baseman Andy Wilkins and pitchers Andre Rienzo and Eric Surkamp.

The White Sox are woefully short behind the plate. Unproven Tyler Flowers is set as the starter and Adrian Nieto his backup, though the team has been rumored to be looking for an upgrade via trade.

(12/23/2013) According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the White Sox claimed starting pitcher Eric Surkamp off waivers from the Giants on Monday.

Surkamp returned from Tommy John surgery in 2013, and he compiled a 7-1 record with a 2.80 ERA in 16 combined starts with Triple-A Fresno and Advanced Class A San Jose. He also made one start for the Giants.

Surkamp was rocked in his only start with the Giants last season but went 7-1 with a 2.80 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 71:23 K:BB ratio in 86 2/3 innings over 16 starts between high Class A San Jose and Triple-A Fresno.

(7/23/2013) Giants pitcher Eric Surkamp (0-1) was hit hard as he was pegged with the loss during his first start back from Tommy John surgery in Game 1 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Reds. The left-hander was shelled for seven runs on nine hits and no walks over 2 2/3 innings pitched in a 9-2 defeat.

Surkamp, who made his first start since the 2011 season, told Comcast SportsNet Bay Area after the game that he does not feel fully recovered from the surgery, claiming his "arm doesn't have that whip back in it."

"It was awesome to be back out there," Surkamp said. "Surprisingly, I wan't really nervous. The last year has been a long year for me. Tonight, just being up here, I was really excited. Unfortunately it didn't turn out better. If I get a chance to throw up here again, hopefully it goes better."

"My arm is back to 100 percent," he said, per the San Jose Mercury News. "Repeating mechanics is part of the process, (but) my arm feels good. There are no limitations. This week is the best my arm has felt."

All three are currently pitching for Triple-A Fresno, and have experience at the major-league level, though Kickham is the only one to have seen the majors this season.

Surkamp was considered the Giants' fourth-best prospect by MLB.com in 2012 before elbow surgery. He led the Eastern League (Double-A) in ERA (2.02) and was second in strikeouts (165) in 2011. He was 2-2 with a 5.74 ERA in six starts for the Giants in '11.

Surkamp, who missed the 2012 season, told MLB.com that he is throwing at about "75 percent" of his full strength. He remains hopeful of making an appearance in an extended spring training games in June.

"I'm still working up to [100 percent]," said Surkamp. "But everything's been great so far."
