Prospect Luis Heredia leaves Class A start due to injury

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(4/13/2014) Pirates starting pitcher prospect Luis Heredia was pulled from his start for Class A West Virginia Saturday because of discomfort in his throwing shoulder, per MLB.com.

Heredia threw just one pitch Saturday before being lifted from the game. The Pirates said Heredia will be re-evaluated in the coming days.

The right-handed pitcher is considered the Pirates' 10th-best prospect by MLB.com. He is 0-1 with a 7.20 ERA for West Virginia.

Command issues plaguing Luis Heredia

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(7/17/2013) Pirates starting pitcher prospect Luis Heredia is five appearances (four starts) into his season for Class A West Virginia. The 18-year-old hurler began the season in extended spring so the organization could limit his workload, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Heredia, who was a major international acquisition in 2011, is 1-2 with a 4.79 ERA and .243 opponents' batting average. Unfortunately, he has struggled with his command, issuing nearly as many walks (14) as strikeouts (16).

Heredia starting off in Gulf Coast

by Adam Moore | CBSSports.com
(6/18/2011) Prospect Luis Heredia will start the season in the rookie Gulf Coast League club. Pittsburgh acquired the 16-year-old's rights from a team in Mexico last August for $2.6 million. Pirates director of player development Kyle Stark said Heredia will be on a very specific and limited workload throughout the summer. "He has made significant improvement as he continues to grow and develop at a very rapid rate, due to how young he is," Stark MLB.com. "He's got really good feel for many things and is a sponge. We're very encouraged by the progress he has made -- personally and professionally."
