Phillies receive P Matt Harrison, five prospects for Hamels

(7/31/2015) The Phillies have at least received strength in numbers from the Rangers in return for stud left-hander Cole Hamels. They get six players back, including four pitchers.

The lone experienced hurler is left-hander Matt Harrison, who is coming off a back injury that has limited him to three starts this season.

The only non-pitchers are catcher Jorge Alfaro and outfielder Nick Williams, who has compiled a fine .299/.357/.470 slash line this season with 13 homers and 10 stolen bases at Double-A Frisco. He has put together the best season of all the players Philadelphia is getting back. Alfaro is at .253/.314/.432 at Frisco.

The Phillies also get back right-handers Jake Thompson, Alec Asher and Jerad Eickhoff. Thompson is 6-6 with a 4.72 ERA for Frisco with 78 strikeouts in 87 2/3 innings. Asher is 4-10 with a 4.43 ERA at Triple-A Round Rock. Eickhoff is 10-4 with a 4.11 ERA with the same team. He has fanned 107 in 111 2/3 innings.

Thompson is considered a top-50 prospect by Baseball America and Baseball Prospectus. MLB.com ranks him as a top-100 prospect. Williams and Alfaro are also among Baseball Prospectus' top-50 and MLB.com's top-100 lists.


Rangers' Jorge Alfaro to undergo ankle surgery

(6/14/2015) Rangers prospect Jorge Alfaro is scheduled to undergo ankle surgery Wednesday, which will end his season, reports MLB.com.

Alfaro is the No. 2 prospect in the organization. He was hitting .253 with five home runs and 21 RBI in 49 games at Double-A.

(5/1/2015) Rival teams told CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman the Rangers should not trade prospects Jorge Alfaro and Nomar Mazara to acquire Phillies starting pitcher Cole Hamels. Some sources indicated that is too much for the Phillies ace.

Alfaro is considered a top-100 prospect by MLB.com (No. 45) and Baseball America (No. 67). He is batting .328 with one home run, six doubles and six RBI in 16 games at Double-A this season. He has a career .264/.328/.433/.761 slash line.

Mazara is also a top-100 prospect for MLB.com (No. 54) and Baseball America (No. 87). He is batting .323 with one double and seven RBI in 17 games at Double-A. He has a .259/.347/.430/.777 slash line in his career.


Rangers' Gallo, Alfaro, Manzara to start season in Double-A

(3/31/2015) Rangers prospects Joey Gallo, Jorge Alfaro and Nomar Mazara will open the season with Double-A Frisco, reports MLB.com. 

Gallo, who was the team's first-round draft pick in 2012, hit .250 in 15 games this spring with two home runs and six RBI. Alfaro hit .313 with four RBI in 16 plate appearances while Mazara hit .286 in seven at-bats.

One of the league's best catching prospects, Alfaro went 5 for 16 with one double and one triple this spring.


Rangers shore up 40-man roster

(11/21/2014) The Rangers have made changes to the 40-man roster.

The team purchased the contracts of Jorge Alfaro , Hanser Alberto, Jerad Eickhoff and Luke Jackson . All four players will now be protected from the Rule 5 draft. In order to make room on the 40-man roster, the team designated outfielder Jim Adduci for assignment.

(8/4/2014) Rangers catcher prospect Jorge Alfaro was promoted from high Class A Myrtle Beach to Double-A Frisco, according to The Dallas Morning News. Alfaro hit .261 with 13 homers, 73 RBI and a .758 OPS in 437 plate appearances for Myrtle Beach.

(7/29/2013) Rangers top prospect catcher Jorge Alfaro has been activated off the minor league disabled list Monday, MLB.com reports. Alfaro is playing with Class A Hickory and missed time due to a fractured left hand. He missed the Futures Game during the All-Star break. Alfaro is hitting .263 with 11 homers and 39 RBI in 262 at-bats at Class A Hickory.

(6/29/2013) Rangers catching prospect Jorge Alfaro broke the fifth metacarpal on his left hand Friday and will likely miss the Futures Game during the All-Star break, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Alfar is hitting .263 with 11 homers and 39 RBI in 262 at-bats at Class A Hickory.

(6/26/2013) Rangers infielder Joey Gallo and catcher Jorge Alfaro have been named to play in the Futures Game during the All-Star break, the Dallas Morning News reports Wednesday. 

Gallo will play for the United States and Alfaro the World. 

Gallo, 19, is batting .237 with 45 RBI and 23 home runs with Class A Hickory. The 20-year-old Alfaro is batting .261 with 10 homers and 34 RBI with Hickory this year.
