Cubs trade Welington Castillo to Mariners for Yoervis Medina

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(5/19/2015) The Cubs have traded catcher Welington Castillo to the Mariners in exchange for pitcher Yoervis Medina, the team announced on Tuesday.

Castillo has served as the Cubs' No. 3 catcher this season, hitting .163/.234/.349 with two home runs and five RBI in 43 at-bats. The trade leaves the Cubs with Miguel Montero and David Ross behind the plate.

"He has the ability to hit, and he's got power," general manager Jack Zduriencik said, per MLB.com. "He has a very good throwing arm and is a good [pitch] blocker. He has a nice skill set. There are those that debate whether he could have been a starting catcher at this level. I think we're getting someone with ability, and we'll see how he fits in with our club."

Castillo will join the Mariners, where No. 1 catcher Mike Zunino has hit .179/.241/.358 with five home runs and 11 RBI in 106 at-bats. Backup Jesus Sucre is just 1 for 15 in six games.

"I don't think anybody is comfortable with having enough pitching," Zduriencik said, per MLB.com. "But catching at the major-league level is a very challenging position. It's difficult to get through the season with one or two catchers. We've been fortunate to have a healthy Mike Zunino, but a couple years ago, he was out six weeks with a broken hamate. It's a position on the field where if you can add depth, it's in your best interest to do it."

Medina, who will report to Triple-A Iowa, has made 12 appearances in his third season in the majors, posting a 3.00 ERA and 9:7 K:BB ratio in 12 innings. He struck out more than one batter per inning in each of the last two seasons while posting ERAs under 3.00 in each.

Mariners could use up to four pitchers to close

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(8/2/2013) The Mariners could mix and match as many as four relievers to close games, now that Tom Wilhelmsen has been removed from the closer's role.

"As of right now, maybe like in the past, we'll piece it together and match up and go from there," acting manager Robby Thompson told MLB.com Friday. "Those games like that and even closer games where we've got the lead, we've got to find a way to win the ballgame."

Thompson said Oliver Perez, Charlie Furbush, Yoervis Medina and Danny Farquhar could all see closing chances while the team tries to sort out the back of the bullpen.
