Rays activate James Loney, Drew Smyly from DL

(4/24/2015) The Rays removed first baseman James Loney and pitcher Drew Smyly from the 15-day disabled list Friday, according to the MLB.com transactions page.

Loney has been dealing with an oblique injury, while a shouler injury has kept Smyly sidelined. He is set to make his season debut Friday against the Blue Jays.

"He's worked really hard to get back here, he's chomping at the bit, and we have to be smart with him," Rays manager Kevin Cash said, per MLB Network Radio. "We'll be cautious."

Meanwhile, with Smyly and Loney no longer on the disabled list, the team sent Mike Mahtook and Allan Dykstra to their Triple-A affiliate.

(4/23/2015) The Rays optioned first baseman Allan Dykstra and outfielder Mikie Mahtook after Thursday's 2-1 win over the Red Sox.

The two players are being sent down with pitcher Drew Smyly and first baseman James Loney set to return from the disabled list Friday. Dykstra hit .129/.286/.226 with one home run and four RBI in 31 at-bats while seeing time at first base. Mahtook didn't get into Thursday's game after joining the team earlier in the day. He's 1 for 4 with one home run in four games with the Rays.

(4/23/2015) The Rays have placed left-handed reliever C.J. Riefenhauser on the disabled list with shoulder inflammation and promoted outfielder Mikie Mahtook from Triple-A Durham, the Tampa Tribune reports.

"I kind of had a little bit of soreness yesterday," Riefenhauser said, per MLB.com. "So they wanted to be cautious. They didn't want me to fall behind, then it might take longer than, what is the DL, 15 days? I don't see it going any farther than that. So, just see how it goes."

The moves complete a whirlwind week for both players. Riefenhauser was recalled from Durham and Mahtook demoted to the same team Friday.


Rays place RP Jeff Beliveau on DL among roster moves Friday

(4/17/2015) Rays reliever Jeff Beliveau was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday due to left shoulder soreness, the team announced. He has a 13.50 ERA in five relief appearances.

The Rays also optioned outfielder Mikie Mahtook to Triple-A Durham, while also recalling infielder Ryan Brett and reliever C.J. Riefenhauser .


Rays' Mikie Mahtook hits first career home run in loss

(4/15/2015) Rays center fielder Mikie Mahtook went 1 for 2 at the plate in Tampa Bay's 12-7 loss to the Blue Jays Wednesday.

Mahtook cranked a 1-2 pitch from Mark Buehrle over the left field wall for a two-run home run in the sixth inning, scoring Logan Forsythe. It was Mahtook's first career hit and home run.

"I was just kind of up there and tried to act as calm as possible," Mahtook said after the game, per MLB.com. "Any time you come in during the middle of the game, you have to get your bearings a little bit. But I got up there and just told myself I needed to be aggressive and stay within myself."

Mahtook is now hitting .250 in four at-bats this season.


Rays officially place C John Jaso on 15-day DL

(4/10/2015) The Rays have officially placed catcher John Jaso on the 15-day disabled list on Thursday, per the team's official website. Jaso is nursing a wrist contusion, which he suffered sliding head-first into second base on Opening Day. The team recalled Mikie Mahtook from Triple-A Durham to replace his spot on the active roster.

(4/9/2015) The Rays are placing John Jaso on the disabled list on Thursday, the team announced. In a corresponding move, the team called up outfielder Mikie Mahtook .

Jaso has been dealing with a wrist contusion that he suffered sliding into a base on Opening Day. Jaso walked in his only at-bat this season.

Mahtook, 25, completed spring training with a batting average of .067 with one home run and three RBI in 15 plate appearances.

The team designated Cole Figueroa, Michael Kohn and Jose Molina for assignment, freeing up space on the roster. The team then added Matt AndrieseRyan Brett , Grayson Garvin, Mikie Mahtook  and Justin O’Conner to the 40-man roster. 


Rays send seven down to minors

The team optioned pitchers Nathan Karns, Kirby Yates, C.J. Riefenhauser and Jeff Beliveau, infielders Vince Belnome and Hak-Ju Lee, and outfielder Kevin Kiermaier to minor-league camp. The team also re-assigned outfielder Mikie Mahtook to minor-league camp.
