Pirates calling on Jared Hughes, Tony Watson more often

(5/12/2015) Pirates manager Clint Hurdle appears to have two favorite players coming out of the bullpen right now, according to MLB.com.

Jared Hughes and Tony Watson have appeared in 18 of the team's first 31 games with Hughes throwing again on Monday, pitching a perfect eighth inning. 

"The more, the merrier," Hughes said. "The most important thing is sticking to a routine, staying in good shape. And I feel good."

"That's high. It would be called red-lining if they were sports cars," Hurdle had said of the two setup men's appearances prior to game. He reiterated afterward, "We do have to find some rest for them."

Hughes made 63 appearances in 2014, but thinks he's just fine with is workload so far.

"A lot of times, it's to face only a couple of batters. And I get low pitch counts," Hughes said, "because I force early contact."

(5/2/2015) Pirates reliever Jared Hughes suffered his first loss of the season in Pittsburgh's 11-inning loss to St. Louis. 

Hughes entered in the tenth and pitched a perfect inning, striking out one. He took the mound to start the eleventh and three straight hits, followed by a walk-off sacrifice fly. 

Hughes saw his ERA grow to 2.84. 


Pirates' Mark Melancon unavailable Sunday

(4/26/2015) Pirates closer Mark Melancon is unavailable to pitch Sunday after racking up three saves in the last three days, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Melancon has dealt with some velocity issues this April and owns a 5.79 ERA and 5:4 K:BB ratio in 9 1/3 innings, but he hasn't surrendered a run in any of his three appearances over the last three days. With the closer getting a scheduled break, the team could turn to lefty Tony Watson or righty Jared Hughes in a save opportunity Sunday.

(4/9/2015) Pirates pitcher Jared Hughes, who pitched 1 2/3 innings in Wednesday's 11-inning win loss to Cincinnati, will be the lone unavailable option out of the bullpen, manager Clint Hurdle told reporters, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. He started the year with a 5.40 ERA.

Hughes threw 29 pitches Wednesday, three shy of his game-high from last season, but indicated he's ready for mroe multi-inning work.

"I didn't even get tired," Hughes said. "I'll be ready to go, as long as they need me to go, whenever they need me to do it. ... I want (Hurdle) to go to me. I'm ready for him to go to me. And when he does, I'm going to go out there and get after it."

Pittsburgh is favored (-115) at Cincinnati, per VegasInsider.com.


Lambo, Liz, Hughes, Caminero expected to make Pirates' roster

(4/4/2015) Andrew Lambo, Radhames Liz, Jared Hughes and Arquimedes Caminero are all expected to make the Pirates' Opening Day roster, manager Clint Hurdle announced on Saturday, per the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Lambo won the final bench spot on the roster despite a .183 batting average this spring. Lis and Caminero are expected to serve as middle relievers, while Hughes will serve as a setup man.

(8/5/2014) Pirates pitcher Jared Hughes was stuck with a loss Tuesday, giving up two runs (one earned) on one walk and no hits in one-third of an inning in his team's 6-2 defeat against the Marlins.

Hughes (6-3) retired the first batter he faced before walking Giancarlo Stanton, and his final batter of the night also reached base on an error. Hughes was then removed, with both runners eventually scoring. He owns a 1.94 ERA and 24:14 K:BB ratio in 46 1/3 innings.

(7/19/2014) Pirates pitcher Jared Hughes surrendered a hit Saturday but pitched a scoreless 11th inning before picking up his fifth win in his team's 3-2 victory over the Rockies.

Hughes (5-2) needed just nine pitches to get his three outs in the 11th after the bullpen used just 10 pitches to record six outs in the ninth and 10th innings. He's tossed 9 2/3 scoreless innings in July to give himself a 1.79 ERA and 19:10 K:BB ratio in 40 1/3 innings.

(4/25/2014) The Pirates placed closer Jason Grilli on the 15-day disabled list -- retroactive to April 21 -- due to a strained left oblique injury, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports Friday. The team recalled Jared Hughes from Triple-A Indianapolis to take his spot in the roster.

Grilli suffered blown saves in back-to-back outings before landing on the DL. He is 4 of 7 in save chances with a 4.50 ERA over eight innings.

Hughes (1-0) was making his season debut after being recalled from Triple-A earlier Monday. He surrendered two hits but was able to escape the ninth inning unscatched, and the Pirates broke a 5-5 tie in the bottom of the inning with a walkoff single. Hughes pitched six scoreless innings in the minors before his promotion.
