Phillies P Jake Diekman gives up grand slam in loss to Red Sox

by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com
(4/6/2015) Phillies pitcher Jake Diekman had an afternoon to forget during Monday's 8-0 loss to the Red Sox.

Diekman came in relief during the ninth inning with the Phillies trailing 4-0. He then gave up a single to Allen Craig and walked Mookie Betts before striking out Dustin Pedroia for his lone out of the inning.

Diekman then walked Mike Napoli to load the bases. Hanley Ramirez then hit a grand slam in the next at-bat. Diekman was then replaced by Cesar Jimenez.

"I felt good," Diekman said, via MLB.com. "But when pitches are belt high, they're going to hit them no matter what. I just need to get the ball down more. I mean, everything was up. That slider was pretty much right where it needed to be for a homer. It was hung really, really bad."

Since Diekman only pitched one-third of an inning, his ERA is a monstrous 108.00 to start the season.

Phillies' Jake Diekman historically bad in loss

by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
(3/28/2015) Phillies pitcher Jake Diekman declared his Friday appearance, "the worst outing in the history of the world."

Diekman entered a scoreless game in the fifth inning and promptly gave up a double and four singles before recording an out. He ended up allowing seven runs in one third of an inning.

"I fell behind in counts and every strike I threw they took a good swing at," Diekman said, per CSN Philly. "It’s embarrassing. ... It's unbelievable."

Despite his 12.27 ERA, Diekman got a vote of confidence from manager Ryne Sandberg. "There’s no concern," he said.

Cole Hamels and three relievers toss a combined no-hitter vs. Atlanta

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(9/1/2014) Phillies pitcher Cole Hamels and three relievers tossed a combined no-hitter Monday afternoon against the Braves in Atlanta. It's the first combined no-hitter in franchise history.

Hamels was denied a no-hitter due to a high pitch count. He was lifted for a pinch-hitter in the seventh inning with a no-hitter intact. He issued five walks and ran his pitch count to 108 before his day was over. He struck out seven over six hitless innings and picked up the win.

Jake Diekman struck out two in a perfect seventh inning and Ken Giles struck out the side in the eighth. Jonathan Papelbon needed nine pitches to retire Jose Constanza, Chris Johnson and Phil Gosselin to secure a 7-0 no-hit victory and the save.

by Nando Di Fino | Senior Fantasy Writer

Diekman, 26, followed up a sparkling 2012 minor league campaign (1.69 ERA, 1.20 WHIP) with a relatively ugly 2013 -- in 30 innings, Diekman has a 5.70 ERA and 1.83 WHIP. However, he has been great against lefties, holding them to a .161 average.
