Johnny Hellweg having Tommy John surgery

(4/29/2014) A second opinion confirmed Brewers prospect Johnny Hellweg has a torn elbow ligament, and he'll undergo Tommy John surgery Tuesday, reports MLB.com. The 25-year-old right-hander was acquired from the Angels in the Zack Greinke trade.


Johnny Hellweg likely to require Tommy John surgery

(4/22/2014) Brewers minor-league pitcher Johnny Hellweg has been diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, and will likely require season-ending surgery to repair it, according to MLB.com.

Hellweg, who made seven spot starts for the Brewers a year ago, will visit Dr. James Andrews in the coming days to determine the extent of the injury.  Hellweg was diagnosed with the injury by the team's head physician, and is likely looking at Tommy John surgery.

Hellweg was 1-2 with a 4.95 ERA in four starts for Triple-A Nashville, and left his last start after just 3 2/3 innings.

(2/20/2014) Brewers pitcher Johnny Hellweg bulked up during the offseason, according to MLB.com.

Hellweg finished last season weighing 208 pounds, but reported to camp at 245 pounds. "I cut out a lot of bad stuff in my diet," Hellweg said. "Mostly protein and carbs, no gluten. It helped. It was a lot of work, actually."

Hellweg said he feels great entering camp. He said he struggled with weight last season, but would not say whether he thought it contributed to some second half struggles. "I lost a lot of weight in July and August, so I just wanted to put it back on to make sure that if I was going to lose it again, I was going to be OK weight-wise,” he said

Hellweg posted a 6.75 ERA in 30 2/3 innings last season.


Brewers no longer have need for rotation competition

(1/23/2014) With Matt Garza agreeing to a four-year, $52 million contract with the Brewers that doesn't bode well for some of the younger starting pitchers -- Tyler ThornburgJohnny Hellweg, Jimmy Nelson and Will Smith -- who were competing for the final spot in the team's rotation.

"I know it stinks for one of the young guys who was going to be competing for that extra spot, but they’ll have their opportunities," Brewers starting pitcher Kyle Lohse said. "This helps out the rotation a lot, I think. It’s a good thing for us."


Johnny Hellweg settles for a no-decision

(9/26/2013) Brewers pitcher Johnny Hellweg failed to factor into the decision Thursday night against the Mets. He allowed one run on two hits and four walks while striking out three over four innings of a 4-2 victory.

Hellweg allowed 10 earned runs over his final 20 innings pitched since joining the team in September. He finished the season with a 1-4 record, a 6.75 ERA and a 2.15 WHIP over eight appearances (seven starts).

(9/21/2013) Brewers pitcher Johnny Hellweg didn't factor into the decision Friday after giving up two earned runs on seven hits and five walks with one strikeout in five innings as the Brewers fell to the Cardinals, 7-6.

Hellweg has walked five batters in three of his last five starts while posting a stupefying 6:22 K:BB ratio with a 7.43 ERA and 2.25 WHIP in 26 2/3 innings. He's slated to face the Mets Thursday.

(9/14/2013) Brewers starting pitcher Johnny Hellweg took the mound Saturday at home against Cincinnati hoping for a good effort against the Reds. He had a so-so performance and ended taking the loss.

Hellweg dropped to 1-4 on the year as he surrendered four earned runs on eight hits and a walk over five innings. He threw 84 pitches before his removal from the game by manager Ron Roenicke. Hellweg struck out one batter and gave up a two-run homer to Shin-Soo Choo in the second inning.

The 24-year-old starter has made six career outings for Milwaukee, all coming this season. He's made five starts and they haven't all been very good. That said, he's shown promise and definitely has a future as a major league starter. Hellweg is scheduled to make his next start Friday against St. Louis.

(9/7/2013) Brewers pitcher Johnny Hellweg earned his first career win Saturday as the Brewers took down the Cubs, 5-3. Hellweg gave up three earned runs on four hits and three walks while striking out one in six innings to move to 1-3 after five appearances (four starts).

Hellweg's win came in his first appearances since July 10, and the six-inning affair was his first time completing five innings in a start. The owner of an 8.64 ERA, 2.34 WHIP and 4:16 K:BB ratio, Hellweg may or may not remain in the rotation moving forward.

Hellweg was recalled from Triple-A Nashville Tuesday and was named the Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Year. He finished 13-5 with a 3.14 ERA in 24 starts -- 23 for Nashville.

(9/2/2013) The Brewers announed Monday they will recall pitcher Johnny Hellweg and outfielder Sean Halton, and purchase the contract of James Nelson from Triple-A Nashville Tuesday. Nelson is considered the Brewers' top prospect by MLB.com.

Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said Hellweg will join the rotation, Nelson will pitch out of the bullpen and Halton will start at first base when a left-handed pitcher is on the hill, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.


Johnny Hellweg named PCL Pitcher of the Year

(8/29/2013) Brewers pitcher Johnny Hellweg was named the Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Year Wednesday and will make one more start for Triple-A Nashville Friday before joining the Brewers as a September call-up, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

The Brewers have not decided if Hellweg will join the rotation upon his promotion.

"We've talked a little about it," manager Ron Roenicke told the Journal Sentinel. "We have to look at some things the next few days and try to figure out how he fits in, and exactly how we're going to do it."

Hellweg is 11-5 with a 3.16 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 84:79 K:BB ratio in 119 2/3 innings over 22 starts with Nashville.

(7/10/2013) The Brewers optioned pitcher Johnny Hellweg to Class A Wisconsin Wednesday, after he lost, 6-2 to the Reds.

Hellweg was hit for four runs in 4 1/3 innings of work, on four hits and five walks. He struck out just one batter while throwing 48 of 83 pitches for strikes.

Hellweg is now 0-3 in three starts, with a 10.97 ERA in 10 2/3 innings. He has 13 walks and three strikeouts, and will head back to the minors to put some work in at least through the All-Star break.

Hellweg, who had been pitching at Triple-A prior to being called up to the majors, will likely not be at Class A for too long. The Brewers only sent him there because their higher affiliates are off for their respective All-Star breaks, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel


Brewers could take Johnny Hellweg out of rotation

(7/10/2013) Brewers starting pitcher Johnny Hellweg will make his third MLB start Wednesday against the Reds, but it could be his last for the time being as the team discusses bringing in a fresh arm or extra bat.

"We'll talk about that," manager Ron Roenicke said, per MLB.com. "We have been. We know what we want to do, [but] things change sometimes. We'll see what we need to do."

Hellweg has had a rough start to his MLB career, posting a 12.79 ERA in his first three appearances and has lost both of his first two starts.

"He hasn't had any help, but he needs to throw the ball better," Roenicke said. "His stuff is so good, he needs to ... just don't try to paint the corners. Try to go outer third, inner third, keep it down, let the action get the ground balls and then hopefully we field it for him."

Hellweg has allowed nine earned runs and seven unearned runs in 6 1/3 innings over two starts and one relief appearance. If he's given another start, it should come Wednesday against the Reds.

Hellweg had his start pushed back after a disastrous debut. He pitched in relief Monday. Hellweg was slated for Wednesday, but Kyle Lohse will start in his place. Manager Ron Roenicke hinted that he preferred throwing Hellweg at home, meaning his next start would likely come Friday.

Hellweg was chased in the second inning after throwing just 52 pitches, 26 for strikes. If he gets another start, it should come Wednesday against the Nationals.
