Pirates release Duke Welker

(7/14/2014) The Pirates have released Duke Welker after designated him for assignment last week.

Welker didn't have an appearances with the Pirates before being designated for assignment. He owns a 4.91 ERA and 15:11 K:BB ratio in 11 innings with Triple-A Indianapolis.

(7/9/2014) The Pirates designated pitcher Duke Welker for assignment Wednesday.

The mose was purely transactional, as a 40-man roster spot had to be cleared for a corresponding promotion. Welker is set to miss the remainder of the season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in June.

(6/6/2014) Pirates minor-league pitcher Duke Welker had Tommy John surgery Thursday, bring his 2014 season to an abrupt end.

Welker suffered the injury in early May, and had a second opinion on his injure elbow from Dr. James Andrews, who ended up performing the surgery. Welker will be out at least one year as a result.

Welker was one of the two players traded for first baseman Justin Morneau at the trade deadline. Welker tossed 1 1/3 innings with Pittsburgh. He did not allow a run.

(9/1/2013) The Twins acquired reliever Duke Welker from the Pirates to complete the trade for Justin Morneau Sunday. Welker made two scoreless appearances for Pittsburgh earlier this season. 

The 27-year-old Welker went 3-4 with a 3.48 ERA over 47 relief appearances with Triple-A Indianapolis this season. He had 64 Ks over 62 innings and a 1.29 WHIP.

(6/26/2013) The Pirates have optioned pitcher Duke Welker to Triple-A Indianapolis, the club announced Wednesday. Welker appeared twice for Pittsburgh and threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings. The 27-year-old owns a 2.78 ERA in 35 2/3 innings for Indianapolis.

(5/8/2013) The Pirates recalled reliever Duke Welker from Triple-A Indianapolis Wednesday after demoting Josh Harrison to the minors. Prior to his recall, Welker was 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA through 10 outings for Indianapolis.

He struck out 20 in 16 innings, while allowing one unearned run on three hits and eight walks. Welker has never appeared in a major-league game.

(3/13/2013) The Pirates announced Wednesday they optioned Vic Black, Stolmy Pimentel, Clint Robinson, Jerry Sands, Hunter Strickland and Duke Welker to Triple-A Indianapolis. They also reassigned Erik Cordier, Darren Ford, Matt Hague, Anderson Hernandez and Jameson Taillon to minor-league camp.
