Reds reveal September callups

(9/1/2014) The Reds announced their September callups on Monday. Before making the moves, the team transferred Homer Bailey to the 60-day disabled list, ending his season. The team called up Carlos Contreras, Daniel Corcino, Jake Elmore, David Holmberg, J.J. Hoover, Tucker Barnhart, Donald Lutz, Yorman Rodriguez, Jason Bourgeois and Ryan Dennick.

Lutz hasn't received an extended opportunity in his stints with Cincinnati this season. He has seven hits in 33 at-bats.

(5/12/2013) Reds outfielder Donald Lutz hit his first major league home run Sunday against Milwaukee.

Lutz homered off the foul pole in the second inning, a three-run shot to open the scoring. It was also his first career extra-base hit. Lutz is hitting .316/.316/.474 in 19 at-bats. With Chris Heisey coming back to Cincinnati next week, his time in the majors could be limited, but he's nade a good impression.

(5/11/2013) With Chris Heisey on the disabled list, Reds outfielder Donald Lutz has taken advantage of recent playing time. Lutz entered Saturday's contest against the Brewers on a five-game hitting streak after he singled, stole second and scored a run in Friday's win over Milwaukee.

"He's aggressive," manager Dusty Baker told MLB.com. "He runs a whole lot better than it appears he should run for the size of his body. He's going to be a good one. It's just a matter of him going to play."

Lutz is hitting .313 with two RBI over 16 at-bats but is expected to be sent back down to Double-A Pensacola once Heisey returns.

Lutz, 24, has hit for power in the minor-league career, but struggles with strikeouts. Despite decent slugging numbers, Lutz's average is just .211 this year. He's taking the place of Chris Heisey, who was put on the disabled list with a strained hamstring.

(4/28/2013) Reds minor leaguer Donald Lutz is expected to be promoted from Double-A Pensacola to the major-league roster, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. He will take the roster spot of Chris Heisey, who is expected to go on the disabled list with a hamstring injury.

Lutz, who is on the 40-man roster, is batting .211 through 21 games. However, he's slugging .513 thanks to two triples, four doubles and five home runs. He also has 14 RBI and 16 runs.

(3/16/2013) The Cincinnati Reds made another round of cuts Saturday, optioning pitchers Pedro Villarreal and Curtis Partch, second baseman Henry Rodriguez and first baseman Neftali Soto to Triple-A Louisville. First baseman Donald Lutz was shipped to Double-A Pensacola.

Lutz 'coming fast'


(2/26/2013) Reds prospect Donald Lutz hit 22 homers with 71 RBI and a .517 slugging percentage between three stops in the minors last and has impressed thus far during the spring. He went 1 for 2 on Tuesday against the Padres, making him 2 for 5 (.400) through four Cactus League games. "I like big Lutz. He's very talented," manager Dusty Baker told MLB.com. "He's very raw, but he's getting refined in a hurry. He hasn't played as much ball as the other guys. He's coming fast. I like what I see. I like his speed for a big man. He works hard in the outfield during batting practice. We're teaching him how to throw correctly."
