De Vries was terrible last year with a 10.80 ERA in four big-league outings after being sidelined with a forearm strain. But he was 5-5 with a respectable 4.11 ERA in 17 outings, including 16 starts, in 2012.

Cole De Vries activated from DL, optioned to Triple-A

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(5/18/2013) Twins pitcher Cole De Vries was activated from the 15-day disabled list Saturday and optioned to Triple-A Rochester after making three rehab starts, MLB.com reports.

"It was a positive because he didn't have any setbacks," assistant general manager Rob Antony told MLB.com. "He worked hard to come back healthy. Right now, we just don't think he's ready to help us, but he's healthy, so we didn't want to keep him on the DL so we optioned him. I think he understood and everything is fine."

De Vries gave up six runs on 11 hits in four innings in his last rehab appearance before being activated.

De Vries, on the DL retroactive to March 30 with a right forearm strain, threw four innings for Class A Fort Myers Sunday. He gave up two runs -- one earned -- on six hits and struck out two.

"He came through all right," Twins general manager Terry Ryan said. "He got to about 50 pitches or so. So he'll pitch May 10 for New Britain at home and we'll see how he does. We'll stretch him out again."

It is unclear how many rehab starts De Vries will need before he's ready to return to the Minnesota rotation.

"I don't know yet," Ryan said. "I'm more concerned about him being sharp. Just getting there [to 100 pitches] doesn't do anybody any good."

Shame for Cole De Vries

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(4/5/2013) I just saw the Twins' Cole De Vries is headed to the DL with the same forearm injury that sidelined him late in spring training, when he allowed just one earned run on four hits in 17 innings.

Believe it or not, I actually had my eye on him in a 24-team mixed league, and I was disappointed to miss out on him in a 12-team AL-only league. That's going pretty deep, I know, but considering De Vries posted a 1.21 WHIP in his 16 starts and one relief appearances for the Twins last year, I thought he had the potential to be a surprise contributor. His strong spring only fortified that belief.

Now, he's probably not worth stashing. Maybe it's just a short-term thing, but forearm injuries often lead to elbow injuries. And elbow injuries often lead to Dr. James Andrews.
