Red Sox activate Blake Swihart, DFA Sandy Leon

by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
(7/20/2015) The Red Sox activated catcher Blake Swihart from the disabled list, manager John Farrell said on Monday, per Comcast.

Swihart hit .241 in previous stints with Boston this year. He was hitting .311 at Pawtucket.

To make room, the Red Sox designated catcher Sandy Leon for assignment. Leon hit .180 in 33 games with Boston this year.

"We need an upgrade on offense at the catching position. Sandy did an excellent job for us in the time that he was here," manager John Farrell said, per MLB.com. "With the choice of trying to get a little bit more offense, Blake is here."

Red Sox give young catcher Blake Swihart a breather Thursday

by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(5/21/2015) Red Sox catcher Blake Swihart will get a rest on Thursday against the Rangers, as he is being held out of the starting lineup. The rookie catcher has started each of the last four games, but he's starting to turn things around at the plate.

Swihart's been struggling offensively since his call-up on May 2, hitting just .170 on the year. But he has a hit in three of his last four games, so perhaps he is starting to adjust to Major League pitching.

Sandy Leon will spell Swihart behind the plate and bat ninth on Thursday.

Red Sox dropping down more bunts in 2015

by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(5/16/2015) Red Sox manager John Farrell has been asking his players, speficially Xander Bogaerts, Blake Swihart and Sandy Leon, to drop down more bunts this season, according to MLB.com.

"We've placed a greater emphasis on it in spring training," said Farrell. "Maybe guys that haven't done it in their Minor League career, guys that dominate the Minor Leagues [but are] going to come up and hit in the bottom third of our order ... you want to allow them to grow as Major League players, but to contribute to a rally by putting down a sacrifice bunt, there's a lot of benefit that goes to the individual."

Boston has already dropped down 10 sacrifices this season in 36 games after only getting 20 down last season.

"You go back to the game situation," said Farrell. "Did we anticipate an offense that would be more consistent than what we've shown? Yes, and we'll realize that in time. But where we are and what the game is suggesting and presenting to us, we've got to be equipped to handle that, and we've asked guys in those spots to lay a bunt down."

Red Sox catcher Blake Swihart out of the lineup Monday

by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(5/4/2015) Red Sox catcher Blake Swihart is out of the starting lineup, with Sandy Leon slotted behind the plate, according to the Boston Herald.

Swihart started the last two games after being called up when Ryan Hanigan went down with an injury. Christian Vazquez didn't think Swihart would get the call Monday to catch Clay Buchholz because of his independence on the mound, according to the report.

"I think he's the tough one to get on the same page with because he runs his game," Vazquez said. "He likes to run his game. But we talk a lot about that and get on the same page to not shake too much last year. It got better."

Leon will make his seventh start and is hitting .200 with two RBI in 20 at-bats. The Red Sox are currently the favorites (-134) against Tampa Bay.

Manager John Farrell said that Swihart will get the bulk of the starts, with Sandy Leon taking over the backup role.
