Diamondbacks, Red Sox swap Myles Smith, Zeke Spruill

(12/12/2014) The Diamondbacks and Red Sox completed two trades Friday night, with one featuring pitcher Zeke Spruill heading to Boston in exchange for pitcher Myles Smith.

Spruill came to the Diamondbacks from Atlanta in the trade that sent Justin Upton to the Braves. The pitcher made six appearances, including one start, with the Diamondbacks in 2014, going 1-1 with a 3.57 ERA and 14:4 K:BB ratio in 22 2/3 innings. He also posted a 6.04 ERA and 71:21 K:BB ratio in 79 innings with Triple-A Reno.

Smith was drafted in the fourth round of the 2013 draft by the Red Sox. He went 5-10 with a 5.82 ERA and 73:62 K:BB ratio in 103 2/3 innings with Class A Greenville in 2014.

Spruill struggled last season to the tune of a 6.04 ERA at the Triple-A level.

Spruill surrendered three runs on 10 hits and two walks while striking out three in 5 1/3 innings of a 4-2 defeat. He tossed 93 pitches, 60 for strikes. Spruill will likely be demoted to Triple-A Reno following Sunday's start.

Spruill has yet to pitch in the majors this season and struggled during a brief stint in 2013. He owns a 2-1 record and 4.72 ERA with Reno this season while giving up 38 hits and fanning 27 in 34 1/3 innings.

(3/9/2014) The Diamondbacks announced a slew of roster moves Sunday, which included Eury De La Rosa, Ender Inciarte, Alfredo Marte and Zeke Spruill being optioned to Triple-A Reno.

The Diamondbacks also reassigned Nick Ahmed, Jake Barrett, Mike Bolsinger, Danny Dorn, Nick Evans, Jake Lamb, Adam Russell, Matt Stites and Bobby Wilson to minor-league camp.

Spruill lost back-to-back starts in his recent stint with Arizona after making four relief appearances with the team in June. He's 0-2 with a 5.56 ERA, 1.94 WHIP and 9:5 K:BB ratio in 11 1/3 innings with the Diamondbacks. Spruill returns to a 4-3 record, 3.24 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 34:24 K:BB ratio in 72 1/3 innings over 12 starts with Reno.

Spruill has allowed 10 runs -- six earned -- over his last two starts (seven innings). He is scheduled to make his next start Saturday at Pittsburgh.

Pierzynski, Mitch Moreland and David Murphy. He allowed five runs on seven hits and three strikeouts over four innings of a 7-1 defeat.

Spruill is scheduled to make his next start Saturday at home against the Diamondbacks. He owns a 6.48 ERA through five appearances (one start).

(7/31/2013) The Diamondbacks are expected to recall pitcher Zeke Spruill from Triple-A Reno to start Thursday against the Rangers according to MLB.com, and he could remain in the rotation moving forward.

The Diamondbacks moved starter Ian Kennedy at the trade deadline Wednesday, and are dealing with a host of injury issues in the rotation, so Spruill could get at least a few turns in the rotation.

Spruill has a 3.24 ERA in 12 starts at Triple-A this season.

(6/28/2013) The Diamondbacks optioned pitcher Zeke Spruill to Triple-A Reno after Friday's 3-0 loss to the Braves, in which Spruill allowed one earned run on two hits and a walk in one inning while striking out one.

The earned run was the first Spruill allowed in four appearances with the Diamondbacks, giving him a 2.08 ERA and five strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings. He returns to a 3-3 record, 4.06 ERA and 24:19 K:BB ratio in 57 2/3 innings at Reno.

(6/21/2013) The Diamondbacks have called up pitching prospect Zeke Spruill from Triple-A Reno prior to Friday's game against the Reds.

Spruill, who was acquired from the Braves in the offseason, has a 3.12 ERA over 14 starts in the minors between Double-A and Triple-A. He has a 44-to-31 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 89 1/3 innings pitched.
