Jose Alvarez sent down, should be back soon

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(8/29/2013) The Tigers were forced to send Jose Alvarez down to Triple-A Toledo Wednesday to make room on the roster for the recall of Luke Putkonen, but they did so with the understanding that Alvarez will be back soon.

"It's for obvious reasons," manager Jim Leyland told MLB.com. "We're short a little in the bullpen."

Alvarez will be back with the Tigers once the Triple-A season ends Monday and rosters expand.

Alvarez has appeared in seven games for the Tigers, with his last two appearances coming out of the bullpen. Alvarez has a 5.00 ERA in 27 innings of work on the season.

Jose Alvarez sent down to Triple-A

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(7/6/2013) The Tigers optioned starting pitcher Jose Alvarez to Triple-A Toledo Friday. Alvarez made four starts for the Tigers. He went 1-2 with a 5.03 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP over 19 2/3 innings.

Jose Alvarez loses in likely final start for time being

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(7/1/2013) Tigers starting pitcher Jose Alvarez struggled in what might be his final start during Monday's 8-3 loss at Toronto. Alvarez (1-2) allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits and three walks in three innings, while striking out four.

Alvarez got off to a promising start, pitching a scoreless first inning. But he started to run into trouble in the second inning, allowing an RBI single to Munenori Kawasaki, which could have been a two-RBI single if Andy Dirks didn't throw out Josh Thole at the plate.

It then began to fall apart for Alvarez in the third inning. Jose Reyes hit a leadoff home run. J.P. Arencibia had a two-RBI single and Maicer Izturis capped the four-run inning with a sacrifice fly.

Alvarez lost a second straight start and Monday was his shortest outing in four starts this season. His ERA jumped from 3.78 to 5.02.

"He just didn't have real good control and he left the ball up," manager Jim Leyland said. "Of course, you pay for that against good big league hitters."

With Anibal Sanchez on track to come off the disabled list Saturday at Cleveland, Alvarez is expected to head back to the minors unless Sanchez has a setback on his rehab assignment.

Jose Alvarez suffers first loss

by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com
(6/26/2013) Tigers starter Jose Alvarez, who is filling in for Anibal Sanchez, got the start Wednesday at home against the Angels. Alvarez was quickly up 2-0 after one inning, but two home runs allowed ultimately did him in.

Alvarez fell to 1-1 on the year with the loss as he surrendered four earned runs on seven hits -- including the homers to Mike Trout and Eric Aybar -- and a walk over 5 2/3 innings. He struck out three and threw 110 pitches. His ERA is 3.78.

Alvarez, 24, has made three starts for the Tigers this season. He's been solid, but the team would like to get back Sanchez. It will be Sanchez or Alvarez starting Monday in Toronto.

Jose Alvarez settles for no-decision

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(6/20/2013) Tigers pitcher Jose Alvarez made a spot start and did not factor in the decision of Thursday's 4-3 win over the Red Sox.

Alvarez served up a solo home run to David Ortiz in the fourth and a run-scoring single to Jacoby Ellsbury in the fifth for his only damage of the night. The left-hander surrendered two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out three in five innings pitched.

Alvarez is scheduled to make his next start Wednesday at home against the Angels.

Jose Alvarez called up for start

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(6/20/2013) As expected, the Tigers have called up Jose Alvarez for Thursday's game against the Red Sox.

Alvarez will take Anibal Sanchez's spot in the rotation while he's on the disabled list. Alvarez has a 2.78 ERA in 13 starts at Triple-A Toledo. He'll face Red Sox starter John Lackey.

Jose Alvarez worth a deep league pickup

by Al Melchior | Data Analyst
(6/17/2013) With Anibal Sanchez (shoulder) going on the 15-day disabled list, Jose Alvarez finds himself back for a second helping of the major leagues. He made a successful debut on June 9 against the Indians, and now he is primed to take a couple of turns in the Tigers' rotation while Sanchez is on the mend.

Alvarez's rise to sixth-starter status has been a pleasant surprise this season, given that he is coming off consecutive nondescript campaigns in the Southern League while with the Marlins' organization. At Triple-A Toledo, Alvarez has remade himself as a strikeout pitcher, yet he hasn't sacrificed his sharp control.

Fantasy owners shouldn't expect a repeat of Alvarez's strong debut, as the Red Sox will be a more formidable opponent, but given what the 24-year-old has shown this season, he could be a productive short-term pickup for owners in deeper mixed and AL-only leagues who need to fill a rotation spot.

Jose Alvarez to replace Anibal Sanchez in rotation

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(6/17/2013) The Tigers announced Monday starting pitcher Jose Alvarez will be recalled from Triple-A Toledo to start Thursday's game against the Red Sox after the team placed Anibal Sanchez (shoulder) on the disabled list. Manager Jim Leyland said he expects Sanchez to only miss two starts.

Alvarez made his major-league debut June 9 against the Indians, allowing one run in six innings during a 4-1 win.

Jose Alvarez optioned to Triple-A

by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com
(6/9/2013) Tigers starter Jose Alvarez, who took a no-decision after a fantastic debut Sunday against the Indians, was optioned back to Triple-A Toledo, as expected, following the game. Detroit recalled Evan Reed to serve in the bullpen.

Jose Alvarez wins in MLB debut

by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com
(6/9/2013) Tigers spot starter Jose Alvarez was more impressive than expected Sunday afternoon at home against Cleveland. Alvarez went four no-hit innings against the Tribe before Ryan Raburn took him deep in the fifth.

The Raburn homer was the only run he allowed over six innings. He gave up three hits and walked one with seven strikeouts over 93 pitches. Alvarez earned his first-career winning decision in the game despite leaving it tied at one run apiece. Don Kelly hit a three-run homer off Justin Masterson in the bottom of the sixth to win it for the youngster.

Making a spot start for Anibal Sanchez, Alvarez (1-0) is not expected to get another turn and is likely headed back to the minors for more seasoning, though he was impressive against the Indians.

Jose Alvarez starting Sunday for Tigers

by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com
(6/8/2013) The Tigers will recall Jose Alvarez from Triple-A Toledo to start Sunday against the Indians, USA Today reports. He will be making his major league debut.

Alvarez is 5-4 with a 2.42 ERA over 12 starts with Toledo. He has 76 strikeouts over 74-plus innings pitched. Alvarez is replacing Anibal Sanchez, who was scratched with a shoulder issue.

Tigers swipe four from roster

by Bill Passonno | CBSSports.com
(3/26/2013) With spring training winding down, the Tigers made another round of roster cuts Tuesday, sending pitcher Jose Alvarez, catcher Brad Davis and third baseman Kevin Russo to their minor-league camp. Detroit also optioned pitcher Luke Putkonen to Triple-A Toledo.

Alvarez to miss 2012 season

by Bill Passonno | CBSSports.com
(3/15/2012) Miami starting pitching prospect Jose Alvarez will miss the entire 2012 season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder, according to MLB.com. The procedure was performed by Dr. James Andrews on Tuesday in Pensacola, Fla.
