Miles Mikolas dealing with shoulder fatigue; Robbie Ross to start in his place

(8/29/2014) Rangers pitcher Miles Mikolas has been scratched from Saturday's start against Houston because of right shoulder fatigue, the team announced.  The team will recall left-hander Robbie Ross from Triple-A Round Rock for the start.

(8/26/2014) Rangers pitcher Miles Mikolas earned a win Monday, giving up just three hits and one walk in eight scoreless innings while striking out five in his team's 2-0 victory over the Mariners.

Mikolas (2-5) needed just 92 pitches to deliver by far his best start of the season and post just his third quality start in 10 tries. He owns a 6.44 ERA and 38:18 K:BB ratio in 57 1/3 innings, even with Monday's gem. Mikolas is slated to face the Astros Saturday.

(8/19/2014) Rangers pitcher Miles Mikolas was hit with a no-decision Tuesday against the Marlins.

Mikolas allowed three runs on eight hits over five innings of work. He struck out six and walked one during the outing. Mikolas was solid to open the game, getting through the first three innings unscathed. He allowed a solo home run in the fourth, but was able to nail down a scoreless fifth inning. He struggled to open the sixth, giving up three straight hits. Mikolas left the game at that point, but was charged with another run.

The Rangers came back to tie the game, giving Mikolas a no-decision. He'll take on the Royals in his next start. 


Miles Mikolas gets destroyed against the Rays

(8/13/2014) Rangers pitcher Miles Mikolas was destroyed by the Rays Wednesday.

Mikolas allowed 10 earned runs on nine hits over six innings. He struck out one and walked two. Home runs were a big issue for Mikolas. He gave up three during the appearance, all of which came in the first two innings. By the end of the second inning, Mikolas allowed five runs. Mikolas was able to throw three straight scoreless innings before again falling into trouble in the sixth. He lasted into the seventh inning, but allowed three additional runs.

With the loss, Mikolas dropped to 1-5 on the year. He's set to face the Marlins in his next start.

(8/8/2014) Rangers pitcher Miles Mikolas didn't factor into the decision Friday after allowing one earned run on four hits and three walks in five innings and striking out four in his team's 4-3 loss to the Astros.

Mikolas was in line for a victory before the bullpen gave up three runs in the bottom of the eighth. He's given up two runs or fewer in three of his last four starts, but he has only one win to his credit during that stretch. Mikolas owns a 6.57 ERA and 26:14 K:BB ratio in 38 1/3 innings. He's scheduled to face the Rays Wednesday.

(8/2/2014) Rangers pitcher Miles Mikolas pitched well enough for the win but didn't receive any run support Saturday against the Indians in Cleveland, dropping to 1-4 on the year. The right-hander allowed two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out six in seven innings of a 2-0 defeat.

Mikolas has lost back-to-back starts, allowing nine earned runs over 11 2/3 innings. He owns a 7.29 ERA and a 1.53 WHIP over six starts (33 1/3 innings). He will look to find the winning path Friday at Houston.

(7/27/2014) Rangers pitcher Miles Mikolas was knocked around by the Athletics Sunday.

Mikolas allowed eight runs, seven earned, on seven hits over 4 2/3 innings. He struck out one and walked four during the outing. The issues started in the fifth inning. After putting two runs on base via the walk, Mikolas allowed a run to score on a throwing error. He then allowed a single and two doubles. Mikolas was able to get out of the inning, but not before giving up five runs. Trouble struck again in the fifth. One run scored while Mikolas was in the game, but he left two men on when he departed. Both of those base-runners came around to score, with Mikolas being charged.

The loss dropped him to 1-3 on the year. His next start will come against the Indians. 


Miles Mikolas earns first win Monday vs. Yankees

(7/21/2014) Rangers pitcher Miles Mikolas earned his first win of the season Monday, giving up two earned runs on four hits and two walks in 7 1/3 innings while striking out three in his team's 4-2 victory over the Yankees.

Mikolas (1-2) didn't fare too well in his first three outings after joining the team in early July, but he turned things around Monday, limiting the Yankees to a sacrifice fly in the first inning and a solo home run in the fourth. He owns a 7.48 ERA and 15:5 K:BB ratio in 21 2/3 innings. Mikolas is scheduled to face the A's Saturday.


Rangers set rotation beyond All-Star break

(7/13/2014) Rangers manager Ron Washington said his rotation after the All-Star break will be Yu Darvish, Colby Lewis and Nick Tepesch, with the other two spots up in the air, reports the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Washington also mentioned Miles Mikolas as a candidate to start.

Texas opens a three-game series at Toronto on Friday.

(7/12/2014) Rangers pitcher Miles Mikolas was hit with the loss in his final start before the All-Star break, Saturday night against the Angels, dropping to 0-2 on the season. The right-hander permitted five runs -- four earned -- on nine hits and one walk while striking out three over 5 2/3 innings of a 5-2 defeat.

Mikolas enters the break with a whopping 10.05 ERA and a 1.88 WHIP over three starts (14 1/3 innings). His next start has yet to be determined, as the Rangers have yet to announce their post-break pitching plans.

(7/7/2014) Rangers pitcher Miles Mikolas took a loss Monday after giving up nine earned runs on 12 hits in 3 1/3 innings and striking out five in his team's 12-7 defeat against the Astros.

Mikolas (0-1) surrendered six straight hits to start the second inning, with all six runners everntually crossing home plate. He then served up a three-run home run in the fourth before being removed from the game. Mikolas owns a 12.46 ERA after two starts. He's scheduled to face the Angels Saturday.

(7/5/2014) The Rangers have made a change to the rotation, swapping Miles Mikolas and Nick Martinez in the team's upcoming series against the Astros, MLB.com reports.

Mikolas has been moved up to Monday so that he can pitch on four days' rest after turning in a solid effort Wednesday. Martinez, who was initially scheduled to pitch Sunday before getting pushed back a day, moves back another day to pitch Tuesday.

(7/3/2014) Rangers pitcher Miles Mikolas fell short of a quality start Wednesday against the Orioles, in his first appearance of the season.

Mikolas pitched into the sixth inning with a lead, but allowed the Orioles to get back into the game. He allowed three runs on three hits in 5 1/3 innings, with one home run allowed. He also allowed a pair of walks, while striking out four batters on 77 pitches as the Rangers went on to lose, 6-4.

Mikolas settled for a no-decision in the loss, and his next start is set for Monday against the Astros. 


Rangers alter rotation plans as Joe Saunders taken off roster

(7/1/2014) A day after allowing four home runs in a loss to the Orioles, Rangers starting pitcher Joe Saunders was designated for assignment Tuesday. The team recalled pitcher Miles Mikolas from Triple-A Round Rock to replace Saunders, and he will start Wednesday against Baltimore.

The Rangers also announced Nick Tepesch has been moved back to Friday against the Mets. Yu Darvish will still start Thursday against Baltimore and Colby Lewis will now start Saturday against New York. Nick Martinez, who is starting Tuesday, will remain on regular rest and start Sunday.

Mikolas was traded twice this offseason after making two appearances with the Padres in 2013. He went 4-2 with a 3.25 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 40:17 K:BB ratio in 61 innings with Triple-A Tuscon last season.

(12/30/2013) The Rangers announced Monday they acquired reliever Miles Mikolas from the Pirates in exchange for first baseman Chris McGuiness. Mikolas was added to the 40-man roster.

The 25-year-old Mikolas was acquired by Pittsburgh in a late November trade with the Padres. Mikolas spent most of the 2013 season pitching for Triple-A Tucson and was third in the PCL with 26 saves. Mikolas is 2-1 with a 3.44 ERA and 1.41 WHIP in 27 MLB relief appearances.


Padres and Pirates make two-for-one deal

(11/25/2013) The Padres traded reliever Miles Mikolas and outfielder Jaff Decker to the Pirates in exchange for minor league outfielder Alex Dickerson on Monday.

Mikolas appeared in only two games for the Padres in 2013, but as a rookie in 2012, he posted a 3.62 ERA in 25 appearances.

Decker made his major league debut this season, going 4 for 26 (.154) with one home run.

The 23-year-old Dickerson played for Double-A Altoona, batting .288 with 17 home runs, 68 RBI and 10 stolen bases.

(11/21/2013) The Padres added minor-league pitchers Keyvius Sampson, Juan Oramas and Donn Roach to the 40-man roster Wednesday. The team also designated outfielder Jaff Decker and pitchers Brad Brach, Miles Mikolas and Jose De Paula for assignment.

Sampson went 12-7 with a 3.57 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 135:62 K:BB ratio in 141 1/3 innings between Double-A San Antonio and Triple-A Tuscon last season. Oramas went 3-2 with a 3.07 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 64:16 K:BB ratio in 55 2/3 innings over 12 starts with Double-A San Antonio. Roach went 8-12 with a 3.53 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 77:40 K:BB ratio in 142 2/3 innings over 28 starts with Double-A San Antonio.

Decker went 4 for 26 with the Padres last season, hitting one home run and driving two in. Brach made 33 appearances for the Padres, going 1-0 with a 3.19 ERA, 1.77 WHIP and 31:19 K:BB ratio in 31 innings. Mikolas made two scoreless appearances for the Padres. De Paula went 4-6 with a 3.86 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 57:11 K:BB ratio in 74 2/3 innings over 14 starts with Double-A San Antonio.
