Marlins catcher J.T. Realmuto collects six RBI in Wednesday's win

(8/12/2015) Marlins catcher J.T. Realmuto drove in a career-high six runs to help lead the Marlins to a 14-6 win over the Red Sox on Wednesday.

Realmuto drove in five of the runs in the sixth inning, which set a franchise record for most RBI in one inning. Realmuto finished the game 3 for 5 at the plate with one triple and a home run. He hit a grand slam off Robbie Ross in the sixth inning.

Prior to his six-RBI game Wednesday, Realmuto was hitting .209 with one home run and two RBI in his last 13 games.

But he'll catch a break on Friday with Jeff Mathis starting behind the plate.

(7/17/2015) Marlins catcher J.T. Realmuto had one hit in three at-bats on Friday, a solo home run in the ninth inning of the 6-3 loss to the Phillies. Realmuto's homer came in the top of the ninth off Jonathan Papelbon, but with the Marlins already down by four runs, they were unable to extend the rally and avoid the defeat.

Realmuto has five home runs this season, and two over his last three games.

(7/11/2015) Marlins catcher J.T. Realmuto had a big day at the plate on Saturday, as the Marlins crushed the Reds 14-3. Realmuto went 3 for 4 with a career-high four RBI, including a two-run home run in the seventh.

Realmuto also doubled and scored twice, as his batting average increased to .251 after the impressive performance. The rookie catcher had been struggling, entering play with a .182 average over his previous six ballgames.

(6/23/2015) Marlins manager Dan Jennings opted to move catcher J.T. Realmuto into the second spot in the lineup Tuesday against the Cardinals. It's the first time he has hit higher than fifth this season.

The rookie catcher is batting .314 (16 for 51) with a .471 slugging percentage, .810 OPS, one triple, three doubles, one home run, eight RBI, five runs and six strikeouts in his last 13 games.

(6/19/2015) After originally being left out of the starting lineup Friday against the Reds, Marlins catcher J.T. Realmuto was a late addition and returned to action after sitting out Thursday due to a back injury.

The rookie catcher is batting .319 (15 for 47) with one triple, two doubles, one home run, seven RBI, five runs, two walks and six strikeouts in 12 June games.

(6/18/2015) Marlins catcher J.T. Realmuto was scratched from Wednesday's loss to the Yankees because of stiffness in his back, reports the Miami Herald.

With Realmuto ailing, the team called up catcher Jhonatan Solano. It is not known if Realmuto will need to go on the disabled list.

Realmuto said he experienced a similar issue in spring training, which sidelined him for three days. He expects the new issue will also keep him out of the lineup for three days

(6/12/2015) Marlins catcher J.T. Realmuto made sure his team would walk away with a win against the Rockies on Friday. With the Marlins leading 2-1, the rookie catcher blasted a three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning, as the Marlins were victorious 5-1.

The home run was Realmuto's third of the season, and is only hit of the game. He owns a .433 batting average over his last eight games.

(6/10/2015) Marlins catcher J.T. Realmuto has raised his batting average from .203 to .238 over his last 11 games.

During that period, Realmuto is hitting .341 with one home run and four RBI. He also has two doubles and a triple. Realmuto has two home runs and 12 RBI in 164 at-bats this season. He has taken over as the everyday catcher after the team released Jarrod Saltalamacchia.

(5/30/2015) Marlins catcher J.T. Realmuto had the biggest hit of the day in Saturday's 9-5 win over the Mets. With the score tied 5-5 in the top of the seventh, the rookie catcher launched a two-run home run to give the Marlins a lead they would not give back.

Realmuto, who also doubled and scored twice on Saturday, now has two longballs on the season, and he's now hit safely in five of his last six games.

Realmuto did his damage in the seventh inning when he crushed a Rubby De La Rosa pitch over the left field wall for a two-run home run, the first of his career.

Realmuto is now hitting .227 with eight RBI in 97 at-bats this season.

(5/18/2015) Marlins first baseman Justin Bour will bat fourth in the lineup on Monday against the Diamondbacks, the first time he has done so this year, the team announced.

Bour, who will make just his fifth start of the year, will replace Michael Morse at first. Marcell Ozuna, the normal cleanup hitter, will slide down to fifth.

"Putting Justin there, putting him in the four hole," manager Dan Jennings said to Fox Sports Florida. "Trying to create some left, right leverage in the lineup. Let's see what happens. As I told these guys. There are 13 position players that are going to be utilized. We'll get guys days off, we'll use the bench, we'll rest our regulars. We all need to be ready to contribute when the bell rings.

J.T. Realmuto also returns to the lineup on Monday after getting the day off Sunday.

The Marlins are currently the favorites (-122) against Arizona.

Realmuto has earned the last five starts behind the plate, going 5 for 18 with two walks and one strikeout during that stretch. Jhonatan Solano will draw the start in his place and serve as the catcher for Henderson Alvarez's first game on the mound since April 12.

Realmuto has assumed starter duties since the release of Jarrod Saltalamacchia, and while he's had no issues against lefties (.357/.471/.643 in 14 at-bats), he has yet to find success against right-handers. He got the day off Sunday after going 0 for 11 in his previous three games.

(5/3/2015) Marlins second baseman Dee Gordon is not in the lineup for the first time this season Sunday, while third baseman Martin Prado is receiving his second day off in his team's matchup with the Phillies.

Gordon has led off all season, while Prado has been the team's No. 2 hitter for the last games with Christian Yelich out. With the pair on the bench. left fielder Ichiro Suzuki will lead off against the Phillies, while shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria will bat second.

The Marlins are also giving catcher J.T. Realmuto a break after starting the team's last eight games. Jhonatan Solano will draw the start behind the plate in his place.

The Marlins are heavy favorites (-185) Sunday.

Giancarlo Stanton singled in a run in the sixth to put the Marlins on top and record his 18th RBI of the season.

J.T. Realmuto singled in Stanton for his third RBI of the year. 

Michael Morse singled in the game-winning run in the eighth for his eighth RBI of the year.

Realmuto continues to start over Jarrod Saltalamacchia, who is just 2 for 25 with a home run to start the season. Realmuto is hitting .278 with two doubles and two RBI in 18 at-bats this season. The Marlins are currently the underdogs (+123) against Philadelphia.


Saltalamacchia on benching: 'I'm not going to cause a distraction'

(4/17/2015) Marlins catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia told reporters he doesn't agree with manager Mike Redmond's decision to start J.T. Realmuto over the last three games, according to the Palm Beach Post.

"Am I mad? Yeah I'm mad, I want to play," Saltalamacchia said. "I'm not going to hurt this team. I'm not going to be the reason that causes a distraction.

"No hard feelings whatsoever. I want to win. My job is to help the team win so whatever I can do to help is what I'm going to do."

Realmuto was promoted from Triple-A New Orleans on Monday, and is hitting .286 (2 for 7) in three games. Saltalamacchia is off to a slow start, batting .091 (2 for 22) with with one home run in seven games (six starts).

"It's six games in. Six games in is a really tough sample to go off of," Saltalamacchia said. "I've never been in this situation before so it's a little different. Come to the ballpark every day ready to play, do what I can to make the team better, be ready whenever I'm called upon."

(4/16/2015) Marlins catcher J.T. Realmuto is in the starting lineup for the second straight day, batting seventh in his team's game against the Mets.

Realmuto drew his first start of the season Wednesday and responded by going 2 for 3 with a double, a walk and two runs scored. He's getting rewarded with another start Thursday, so Jarrod Saltalamacchia will be available off the bench for a second straight game.

"There’s no doubt Salty’s been grinding, the idea is to give him a couple of days just to kind of regroup and we’ll go from there," manager Mike Redmond said, per the Palm Beach Post. "J.T. is a guy that has played a lot in the minor leagues. With young guys you want to be careful not to sit them on the bench for an extended period of time. So we’ll try to get him in there as much as we can. We’ll see how we go from there."

The Marlins are slight underdogs (-102) against the Mets Thursday.

Realmuto will take over backup-catcher duties from Jeff Mathis, who suffered a fractured finger Sunday. Realmuto got his first taste of major-league action last season, hitting .241/.267/.345 with nine RBI in 29 at-bats. He's 5 for 13 with a stolen base in three games with Triple-A New Orleans.

Capps is set to join the Marlins pitching staff with Henderson Alvarez heading to the disabled list. Capps has made two appearances with New Orleans this season, giving up two earned runs in one inning of work.

Brignac will serve as a utility infielder after Don Kelly suffered a fractured finger Sunday. Brignac hit .222/.300/.346 in 81 at-bats with the Phillies last season.
