Brian Goodwin thrives off aggressive approach

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(5/15/2013) Nationals prospect Brian Goodwin launched his third home run of the season Tuesday and is hitting .258 with a .773 OPS at Double-A Harrisburg.

Goodwin, who is viewed as the organization's second-best prospect, has focused on taking his opponents out of their comfort zone with his speed and aggressiveness. He has struck out 47 times in 38 games and has gone 7 for 14 in stolen-base attempts.

Double-A manager Matt LeCroy told MLB.com that Goodwin can make the necessary adjustments to become the team's future leadoff man.

"It's just a matter of time. He can throw, he runs really well, he can hit, he's got power, he can drive the ball in the gaps," LeCroy said. "He's got all these great skills, he's just got to put it all together in the field. You see glimpses of it a lot during games. Every day he goes out and plays he's going to learn and get better."

Goodwin is hitting .243 with one home run, three RBI in his last 10 games played. He has struck out 11 times and has gone 2 for 6 in stolen-base attempts.

(4/4/2013) Double-A Harrisburg will open the season with nine of the Nationals' top 30 prospects on its roster, according to The Washington Post.

Among those nine prospects are the team's top three hitting prospects ranked by Baseball America. They are Anthony Rendon (No. 1), Brian Goodwin (No. 3) and Matt Skole (No. 4). They will be joined by pitcher prospect Nathan Karns (No. 5).
