Rays to use Beckham, Elmore at shortstop with Cabrera sidelined

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(7/17/2015) With Rays starting shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera on the disabled list due to a hamstring injury, manager Kevin Cash said Tim Beckham and Jake Elmore will split time at shortstop, according to the Tampa Bay Times

"There won't be a constant," Cash said. "We'll try to find what we view as the better matchup for each guy. They both do a lot of things well.

"You look at Beck, he has the ability to hit the ball out of the ballpark and play good defense at short. You look at Jake as having the ability to be as consistent probably as anybody and be able to manufacture some things with a bunt, hit-and-run, stuff like that.

"We're going to miss Cabby while he's down, but we like the two options going forward."

Elmore went 1 for 3 and reached 15 RBI on the season.

"You know what? When I hit it, I didn't even think home run," Elmore said. "I just thought, 'Please stay fair,' because I knew it was at least getting down. Then I was like, 'Oh, man, that might get out of here.' ... I was just worried about it staying fair."

by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com

"Any time I can help the team, it's always a good night from that perspective," Elmore said, per MLB.com. "That one stung, but it is just one of those nights. But obviously I walked away encouraged from being able to drive some people in."

Elmore went 2 for 5 and has hit in four straight games. He's 4 for 7 since his most recent call-up.

"Jake Elmore picked us up," manager Kevin Cash said. "We talked about getting the big hit, he provided two of them early. He's gotten some big hits.
