Rays sign Jake Elmore to minor-league deal, invite to big camp

(2/9/2015) The Rays announced that they signed second baseman Jake Elmore to a minor-league deal on Monday. 

Elmore was designated for assignment by the Pirates on Jan. 20. He refused minor league assignment and became a free agent. He's played 87 Major League games for the Diamondbacks, Astros and Reds over the last three years, hitting .221 with two home runs and 13 RBI. 

Elmore's deal includes an invitation to the Rays' Major League camp.

(2/2/2015) Former Pirates shortstop Jake Elmore has elected to test free agency after being designated for assignment, according to the International League transactions report.

Elmore, who was claimed by Pittsburgh in November, was designated for assignment in January to clear a spot on the 40-man roster. Elmore played in five games for the Reds in 2014, batting .182/.182/.432 with four strikeouts.

(1/20/2015) Pirates infielder Jake Elmore was designated for assignment Tuesday to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for infielder Jung-ho Kang.

Elmore, who was claimed off waivers in early November, has just a .221 average over three MLB seasons. He also has two home runs, eight doubles and 13 RBI.

The 27 year old returns to the 40-man roster after earning just 11 at-bats with Cincinnati this season. He has played with four different teams since 2012.

(9/1/2014) The Reds announced their September callups on Monday. Before making the moves, the team transferred Homer Bailey to the 60-day disabled list, ending his season. The team called up Carlos Contreras, Daniel Corcino, Jake Elmore, David Holmberg, J.J. Hoover, Tucker Barnhart, Donald Lutz, Yorman Rodriguez, Jason Bourgeois and Ryan Dennick.

Elmore has been dealing with a quad injury. He was sent to the 60-day disabled list in order to make room for pitcher Jeff Francis, who the A's brought in Sunday.

(5/6/2014) Athletics infielder Jake Elmore suffered a setback in his recovery from a left quad injury, according to the San Francisco Chronicle Tuesday.

Elmore, who had appeared in two minor-league rehab games before re-injuring his leg, is back in Oakland meeting with the team's training staff. The extent of the setback is unknown at this point.

Elmore is working his way back from a strained quad that earned him a trip to the disabled list in late March. He'll try to show enough at Sacramento to crack the team's 25-man roster as a utility infielder.

The 26-year-old Elmore, who was released late this spring by the White Sox, batted .242 last season with Houston.

Savery allowed just four runs -- two earned -- over 8 2/3 innings this spring. Elmore batted .314/.397/.353 with four RBI over 51 at-bats.

Elmore hit .242/.313/.325 with two home runs and six RBI in 120 at-bats with the Astros last season. Sanchez hit .241/.293/.296 with 28 RBI and 16 steals in 432 at-bats with Triple-A Charlotte. Thompson hit .229/.321/.383 with 15 home runs, 73 RBI and 25 stolen baes in 507 at-bats with Double-A Birmingham.

(9/12/2013) Astros infielder Jake Elmore made team history Tuesday, becoming the first player to play all nine positions in a single season.

Elmore appeared as a defensive replacement in center, the only position he had not played this year. In a game earlier this season, Elmore played both pitcher and catcher. Elmore is hitting .250/.323/.336 in 116 at-bats.

(8/20/2013) Astros infielder Jake Elmore replaced catcher Carlos Corporan in the fourth inning and pitched in the eighth inning of Monday's 16-5 loss against the Rangers, making it the 14th time in MLB history a player has appeared as a catcher and pitcher in the same game, per MLB.com.

"Elmore should probably be in the icetub, icing every part of his body," Astros manager Bo Porter said.

Elmore retired the Rangers on 11 pitches, inducing groundouts by Jurickson Profar and David Murphy.

"I don't know if you call it a fastball," Elmore said. "I was just throwing a little two-seamer and trying to keep it down in the zone to get ground balls."

(8/7/2013) Astros shortstop Jake Elmore entered Tuesday's game against Boston for the injured Jonathan Villar. He ended up having a solid game in the 15-10 loss.

Elmore went 2 for 2 with his second home run of the season. He went deep in the eighth inning for a solo shot. Elmore scored twice and is batting .247.

The 26-year-old had not had a base hit since July 22 as his average dipped from .277 to where it is now 30 points lower.

(7/2/2013) Astros infielder Jake Elmore has had a rough transition to shortstop since his recall from the minors. Elmore, who primarily played second base for Triple-A Oklahoma City, has committed three errors in four games at shortstop since replacing Marwin Gonzalez, who was demoted to the minors.

Still, Astros manager Bo Porter said Monday the Astros remain committed to Elmore at shortstop.

"When you make a commitment to give a guy an opportunity, it can’t be a wishy-washy commitment," Porter said, per the Houston Chronicle. "You have to literally give him an opportunity."
