Don't fear Tyler Cloyd's minors numbers

by Al Melchior | Data Analyst
(8/20/2013) Given that Tyler Cloyd went 5-9 with a 4.89 ERA at Triple-A Lehigh Valley this year, it's no wonder that Fantasy owners haven't flocked to him now that he's back in the Phillies' rotation. Cloyd's poor minor league stats, along with the imminent return of Roy Halladay, may make the 26-year-old look like a waste of a waiver claim, but there may be more promise there for NL-only owners than there appears to be on the surface.

Cloyd's ERA has been damaged by unfavorable home run and strand rates, but he's turned his season around lately. Over his last seven starts with Lehigh Valley, Cloyd has allowed only four home runs and posted a 1.34 ERA. He's also walked only five batters over those 47 innings, but Cloyd's control has been superb over his minor league career.

Though he'll have a limited window to prove himself, Cloyd could be good enough to unseat Ethan Martin in the rotation when Halladay returns. Should that happen, Cloyd could offer deep league owners a low WHIP during the stretch run.

Tyler Cloyd most likely candidate to join Phillies rotation

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(8/14/2013) Phillies pitcher Tyler Cloyd is the most likely candidate to replace John Lannan, who suffered a potentially season-ending knee injury in Wednesday's game against the Braves, in the rotation, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

Cloyd went the distance in Wednesday's win with Triple-A Lehigh Valley, surrendering one earned run on three hits and one walk while striking out seven in nine innings and throwing 116 pitches. He is 2-2 with a 3.41 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 18:15 K:BB ratio in 34 1/3 innings over six starts with the Phillies.

Tyler Cloyd pitches around wildness in win

Cloyd is now 2-2 on the season through five starts, with a 3.68 ERA in 29 1/3 innings of work. He has 16 strikeouts and 12 walks, and has quality starts in four of his outings. He will try to continue his solid pitching in his next start, scheduled for Wednesday in Minnesota.

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com

Cloyd allowed six runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out one in 2 1/3 innings in a 9-3 defeat.

Cloyd has a 5.74 ERA and a 1.60 WHIP in three starts. He is scheduled to make his next start Saturday at home against Milwaukee.

Offense awakens for Tyler Cloyd's first win

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(5/21/2013) Phillies starting pitcher Tyler Cloyd pitched well again in his second start Tuesday against the Marlins, and this time the offense picked him up for a win.

Cloyd held the Marlins to just two runs in seven innings of work, as he allowed eight hits, just two of them for extra-bases. He struck out five and walked just two, while throwing 62 of 105 pitches for strikes.

Cloyd got plenty of run support, after earning a no decision in a 3-2 loss the last time out. The Phillies won, 7-3 Tuesday, giving Cloyd his first win of the season.

Cloyd is set to take on the Red Sox in Boston for his next start, scheduled for Monday.
