Zimmer is expected to take two days off before making his second appearance for Idaho Falls, but his next step beyond that is not yet known. Zimmer has yet to pitch in a competitive game this season, due to a number of issues dating back to spring training.

Kyle Zimmer set to resume throwing program

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(7/8/2014) Royals pitching prospect Kyle Zimmer has been cleared to resume a throwing program after an MRI on his ailing back taken last week came back clean, according to Fox Sports. He had been shelved in May after experiencing discomfort and it was learned he had sustained a muscle strain.

Zimmer has since rehabbed and rested at the team's spring training complex in Arizona. His best-case scenario now would be to complete the throwing program in about four weeks and finish the regular season pitching in the minor leagues.

Kyle Zimmer to resume throwing in mid-July

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(6/25/2014) Royals pitching prospect Kyle Zimmer is expected to resume his throwing program around July 15, the Kansas City Star reports.

Zimmer, the No. 5 overall pick in the 2012 rookie draft, was shut down at the end of May due to a muscle strain in the back of his right shoulder. His winter throwing program also came to an abbreviated end due to shoulder soreness, and he missed spring training with biceps tendinitis. If his recovery goes well, the Royals plan to give Zimmer some work in the Arizona Fall League.

Kyle Zimmer to begin throwing next week

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(3/29/2014) Royals pitcher Kyle Zimmer will begin throwing next week, according to the Kansas City Star.

Zimmer will remain in extended spring training through most of May. He's been dealing with biceps tendinitis, which has prevented him from doing much during camp. If Zimmer does factor into the organization's major-league plans, it will likely be in September.

The club wants to make sure it's being safe with one of their best young assets. "Truthfully, it is the cautious way to go," assistant general manager J.J. Picollo said. "But this guy is a long-term guy for us."

Royals remain high on Kyle Zimmer

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(2/8/2014) The Royals have no illusions about young right-hander Kyle Zimmer breaking with the club out of spring training, but they remain optimistic about their No. 5 overall choice in the 2012 draft and are hoping he can contribute to the big-league team down the stretch.

Zimmer threw just 108 1/3 innings last season at Class A and AA combined due to biceps tendinitis. His ERA soared to 4.32 in 22 starts, but he showed his stuff by striking out 140.

"The goal would be to have him peaking in the minor leagues in May, June, going into July," Royals assistant general manager J.J. Picollo told the Kansas City Star. "And then really ramping it up and taking the handcuffs off him, hopefully in a playoff run, and he pitches in September and hopefully October."

Royals will bring Kyle Zimmer along 'very slowly'

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(1/28/2014) Although the Royals have invited pitching prospect Kyle Zimmer to spring training, general manager Dayton Moore said the team will be careful not to rush the right-hander after he was shut down with shoulder stiffness in August.

"He’s down in Arizona right now, and we’re going to move very slowly with him," Moore told The Kansas City Star. "We want to make sure he can finish strong in 2014."

The other non-roster invitees are Jason Adam, Aaron Brooks, Sugar Ray Marimon, Cory Wade, P.J. Walters, Scott Alexander, Juan Graterol, Ramon Hernandez, Adam Moore, Jason Donald, Brandon Laird, Jorge Bonifacio, Gorkys Hernandez, Melky Mesa and Paulo Orlando.

Royals to shut down Kyle Zimmer

by Jack Moore | CBSSports.com
(8/16/2013) The Royals will shut down pitching prospect Kyle Zimmer for the rest of the season due to right shoulder stiffness, the Kansas City Star reports.

The injury isn't expected to last into next year, so Zimmer will only miss about two weeks of game action thanks to the early finish to the minor league season. Zimmer posted a 4.82 ERA in 18 starts at high Class A Wilmington, but he had a 1.92 ERA with 27 strikeouts in 18 2/3 innings at Double-A Northwest Arkansas.

'Mechanics' coming together for Kyle Zimmer

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(7/10/2013) Royals starting pitcher prospect Kyle Zimmer struck out a career-best 13 batters Tuesday, improving to 3-8 for Class A Wilmington. He allowed one run on four hits in six innings.

"Everything felt pretty good, all four of my pitches I was able to throw for strikes," he said, per MLB.com. "My fastball command felt really good, I got ahead of their hitters and finished them off pretty well when I got to two strikes. I was just getting ahead, being aggressive in the zone. I felt like I was able to move the fastball back and forth across the plate and throw my curveball for strikes. Elevate the fastball to get some swing-throughs and had the curve sharp in the zone."

Zimmer has a 5.00 ERA and 1.28 WHIP through 17 starts, but the 2012 first-round pick (fifth overall) has been much better lately. He is 3-2 with a 2.81 ERA in his last five starts. He has 36 strikeouts in 32 innings in that span. For the season, Zimmer has 103 strikeouts to 30 walks in 84 2/3 innings.

"I feel like my mechanics are starting to come together. I'm staying on line pretty well, throwing all my pitches in the zone and being able to pitch guys backwards," he said. "I can manipulate my fastball, just been working on attacking the zone more consistently."

Royals prospect Kyle Zimmer coming on strong

by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com
(7/1/2013) Royals top pitching prospect Kyle Zimmer threw a complete-game shutout for Class A Wilmington in a doubleheader Saturday. Zimmer, the No. 24-rated prospect entering the season according to Baseball America, even flirted with a no-hitter.

The 21-year-old carried the no-no into the sixth inning before allowing a hit. He finished with a two-hitter over seven innings with two walks and six strikeouts. Zimmer is 2-7 with a 5.40 ERA.

Kyle Zimmer going through a learning curve

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(6/3/2013) Royals starting pitcher prospect Kyle Zimmer, who was taken fifth overall in the 2012 draft, is 0-5 with a 5.54 ERA and 1.35 WHIP through 11 starts for Class A Wilmington. Royals assistant general manager J.J. Picollo told The Kansas City Star it's "a bit baffling at times" to watch Zimmer struggle because he continues to exhibit plus command.

The right-hander has struck out 65 batters and walked 22 in 52 innings.

"The grades are phenomenal on his pitches," Picollo said. "They’re all well above average. Anywhere from 60 to 80 (on an 20-80 scale) on his grades every night. As we start breaking down start by start, his pitch selection needs to get better. He’s just not going to be able to out-stuff hitters. He’s going through the learning process a little sooner than we expected. From a delivery standpoint and a stuff standpoint, it’s everything and then some. Right now, we have to be a little more patient than we anticipated. But that’s OK. I think in the end it will speed up (his development)."

Kyle Zimmer has team-first attitude

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(5/5/2013) Royals starting pitcher prospect Kyle Zimmer remained winless through six starts for Class A Wilmington, despite allowing one run on two hits and three walks in 6 1/3 innings during his latest start Saturday. Zimmer struck out six batters, which is the fifth time this season he's managed at least five strikeouts.

Zimmer's had a few rough outings, which has resulted in a 4.03 ERA, but he has struck out 40 batters (tied for second in the Carolina League) in 29 innings and owns a .198 opponents' batting average. Zimmer is considered the Royals' second-best prospect by MLB.com.

"I don't really care about my stats individually as much as the team stats," Zimmer said, per MLB.com. "If I go out there and get a no-decision but the team wins, I could care less. As long as the team's getting 'W's,' it's what we're all trying to go out there and do."

Zimmer undergoes minor procedure

by Al Melchior | Data Analyst
(8/24/2012) MLB.com reports that Royals pitching prospect Kyle Zimmer had surgery to remove loose bodies in his right elbow on Thursday. The loose bodies were discovered during a physical exam that took place around the time that the Royals drafted Zimmer back in June with the fifth overall pick. He is expected to need six-to-eight weeks to recover from the procedure. Zimmer had started six games at Class A Kane County and had gone 2-3 with a 2.43 ERA.
