Max Fried's season ends, with Tommy John needed

(8/15/2014) Padres pitching prospect Max Fried will undergo Tommy John surgery next week, the team announced Friday.

Fried, who has been dealing with soreness in his pitching elbow all season, was diagnosed with a torn UCL in recent days after finishing a rehab assignment. He is set to have surgery Aug. 20 and will be out 12-14 months while recovering.

Fried, the team's first pick in the 2012 draft, allowed six runs in 10 2/3 innings of work between rookie-league and Class A before he was hsut down.

(7/26/2014) Padres pitching prospect Max Fried is scheduled to have his sore elbow examined in San Diego next week, MLB.com reports.

Fried reported soreness in his pitching elbow after his last start Monday. He got a late start to the season while dealing with forearm soreness in the first half, and he's made just two starts with Class A Fort Wayne.

(7/14/2014) Padres starting pitcher prospect Max Fried is ready to join the roster at Class A Fort Wayne after making two starts on a rehab assignment with the team's Arizona League (rookie) affiliate, per MLB.com. Fried, who has been sidelined for most of the season with a forearm injury, is set to start Wednesday for Fort Wayne.

Fried allowed two runs on five hits and three walks in four innings for the AZL Padres. He struck out seven.

Fried has yet to pitch this season due to a forearm injury. If he can avoid a setback, he will could move on to a minor-league affiliate shortly.

Fried, who is considered the team's second-best prospect by MLB.com, is expected to eventually join the rotation at high Class A Lake Elsinore.

(2/20/2014) Padres pitching prospect Max Fried has been shut down for at least two weeks after experiencing elbow soreness, U-T San Diego reports on Thursday. Fried reported the soreness after throwing long-toss from 120 feet early this month.

"At this stage of his career, this time of year, we're obviously gonna be careful and make sure he's symptom-free before he gets going," general manager Josh Byrnes said. "There was still enough soreness in there that we're gonna be conservative and make sure we knock it out."

(7/17/2013) Padres starting pitcher prospect Max Fried had hit a bit of a rough patch for Class A Fort Wayne. The 2012 first-round pick (seventh overall) has lost three of his last four starts, dropping him to 3-4.

Fried has a 3.93 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and .255 opponents' batting average in 15 starts. He has struck out 70 batters and walked 36 in 73 1/3 innings. 

The left-handed pitcher has started to tail off after a strong start. He was 2-1 with a 3.62 ERA in 11 starts in the first half, but he is 1-3 with a 4.82 ERA in four starts in the second half. He has posted a .292 opponents' batting average in the second half as well.

(5/6/2013) Padres starting pitcher prospect Max Fried has yet to taste defeat in his first four starts for Class A Fort Wayne. The 2012 first-round pick (seventh overall) is 1-0 with a 3.79 ERA and .243 opponents' batting average.

Fried also has 22 strikeouts to 10 walks issues in 19 innings. He has yet to allow a home run. Fried entered the season as the Padres' second-best prospect, according to MLB.com.
